cam chain tensioner tool doesn't fit...

I'm replacing my valve cover gasket on my B5 A4 (AEB engine) as a DIY for the first time. I've been staring at the cam chain tensioner seal and wondering if i should tackle that. I have the Schwaben tool but it doesn't fit between the chain and 'post' in front of the chain... i'm estimating 1 to 2 mm interference. So is it acceptable to try to 'slide' the chain rearward on the chain guide? There's obviously a lot of resistance to that since the tensioner is tensioning, and so i'd have to figure out some sort of clamping mechanism to force it to slight aft a bit. Any advice? Thanks.

No clamping mechanism needed. Just put your Big Pants on and git-r-done.
