    Thinking about MK6 Golf R...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I love my A4... but I'd love it more (I think) if it were a little hatchback that could carry more... so I've been looking around and it doesn't seem like you can find what I'm really after:

    Hatchback
    Turbo motor
Manual trans (6 speed preferred, 5 will do) - AUTOMATIC IS NOT AN OPTION
    AWD
    nice interior
price around $30k or less (less is better )

I'm not overly concerned about speed/mega performance, but it must be able to cruise comfortably and be reasonably quiet @ 100mph or so, so comments like "you can upgrade to a Stage 3+, FMIC, blah blah blah...." won't matter to me. I've been on APR Stage 1 for 4 years and am fine with the performance & mileage I get.

If the A3 can be had with the 2.0T, 6sp MT & quattro, then great!!! But I don't think it ever was.

I've looked at WRXs, but they seem to be super cheap shitboxes any more... FAST, but cheap.

So that has led me to the Golf R... even though it's FWD biased, has no Auto Headlamps or rain sensor... I drove one and it was nice. Like the A4, but with more supportive seats, but didn't feel as quick as my A4.

I like the creature comforts of my Audi and am past the point of wanting a hooligan-mobile... I want something functional, but refined... and the U.S. market SUCKS for that niche. I'm reaching out to the Audi community because you'll know best who the competitors are and how they stack up. I'm not in a rush at all, just seeing what is out there. Thanks all!!!

I've considered the A4 avant but it just doesn't look that appealing to me.... I do plan to check more out in person though. I think the A3 is more the size I'm looking for, but may not be available in the configuration I desire, but we'll see. I am still going to look at & drive some WRXs... I can put in better seats, amenities, etc.... but the guy I rent a room to has a 2015 WRX and the clutch SUCKS.

I am just curious as to why the 201 WRX clutch sucks...I was thinking of going this route.......I am happy with my '07 A4 6MT APR stage 2, but eventually I would want something more refined....and maybe faster but an S4 is more than what I would like to spend....also thought about going the mitsu evo path...

Because a 201 WRX is an old car made 1814 years ago! clutches weren't great back then.

Brendan, my vote is for a TTRS :) totally impractical but super fast. Plus 5 cylinder.
Bitches love an odd number of cylinders.

I went from a B7 A4 to a Mk6 Golf R (Totalled the A4) and I can say the Golf R is a lot more fun in my opinion. Im not sure how modded your A4 is if at all but I feel my R is faster then my A4 but they were both stockish (A4 may have been tuned before I purchased it)

As far the concerns you have the R has a little less space but not by much. The auto headlamps can be retrofit for about $100 but turning the dial never bothered me. The suspension is quite stiff compared to my old A4 with the sport suspension and as far as the "FWD" bias its really not as bad as people make it out to be. But the worst part would be the gearing. In 6th doing 75-80MPH on the highway its turning 3000-3300RPM. I honestly do not think you will be happy with a Golf R because it is more of a hoon machine then the A4. I would suggest an S4 avant but you have already said you really do not prefer the wagons. But it is the best Impractical/Practical compromise I could find.

    Pics for clicks.

I'd seriously recommend atleast trying to find and test driving an avant before jumping to the Golf R. My wife has a Tiguan with the same 4motion awd, and hands down Quattro trumps it in the snow. In fact, even with decent tires, Id say quattro still out performs 4motion when it comes to driving character.

    Mine and hers,

    out and about yesterday

and tackling nearly a foot of snow.

Also, since you're willing to wait, the Focus RS is making it's way here sometime in 2016. It's a pretty solid contender based on your requirements. but it has an ugly face!

well one thing I didn't touch on was DSG. I love (LOVE) my manual, but I'm also a huge fan of the dsg transmission, despite the lack of clutch pedal. there's something extremely satisfying about that dsg "fart" between upshifts and down shifting with the paddles. It truly operates like an automated manual, because it is. the wife's eos was dsg and i loved driving it, and i wish the tig had one too.

I'm keeping my B7 until the wheels fall off. I may be adding a TDI Q7 to the stable at some point though.

Hipsters should get the Fargo treatment (think wood chipper) for being fruity little bitches.

S3 looks nice but no manual = HUGE FAIL. More than I'm willing to spend as well right now. I drove a 2015 A3... weak.

But to continue with your thread I agree the Mk6 Golf R would be decent replacement. Just make it a stage 2+ car and you should be happy

2016 Golf R with 6mt is on track to be 35,1xx. It's 1100 cheaper than the dsg apparently.

Load a gti up with the features that the golf r comes with standard. You'll end up paying 30k+ optioning it out. 5k more for what has become a pretty nice awd system, and a lot more power, among other things. Doesn't sound so terrible to me given the (new car) options.

The MK6 Golf R only came in a 6 speed manual in the US.

The MK5 R32 came only in DSG.

For what it is worth, I have spent a lot of time in the MK6 Golf R in the last year. I'm selling all 3 of my personal Audis and getting into a MK6 R, it is a spectacular car... and feel much lighter than a B5/B6/B7/B8/etc... chassis and it is very easy to make make power with. I think you would be pleased OP.

No OEM headunit for me. I have a Pioneer AppRadio that is integrated with my phone so I have touch control of my phone through the stereo. Google Maps, Netflix... you name it. If it's on my phone, I get it on my stereo screen.

linky link? i'm never a fan of the way aftermarket head units look, idk why there isn't one with an incredibly thin, non-glossy bezel (seriously nobody's interior is gloss black, it never matches any car lol), no neon backlit buttons, just all touch screen with a tiny power button with a tiny red led

I stand corrected. Was def thinking r32, my bad
