    Stupid question or not...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is it just me or is it normal that the slur on the T-Tronic gearbox is incredibly painful when the car is cold.

The S-Tronic is so much better! If there are two things I think are a problem with the SQ5 it's the suspension (sorted) and the gearbox. I know the S-Tronic most likely cannot handle the toque of the turbo diesel which is why they've gone for the T-Tronic instead of the far superior twin clutch S-Tronic but in the morning it's just awful!!...even with the 03M Transmission Mount...

    Opinions please?

No I've noticed it quite often the past few days. We've had temps in the teens and single digits, when I drive the first mile or two the gearbox has some serious lag from 1st to 2nd and 3rd. after it warms up though, I dont see any issues. normal I drive the first few minutes in "D" just to let it find its groove. Not sure all Tiptronics are like this though as my B8 A4 didnt have this issue..

Exactly what I find...OK so it's normal in cold temps and until warmed up... Kinda what I expected, I just wanted to check. Thanks.

I've had a few VW/Audi tiptronics and including this one they all have jerky first AM shift and then slow shifts until a little warmed up. Not sure why, but they are not good when cold.

Same here. On the coldest mornings, 1-2-3 sucks for about 6 blocks, then it's okay again.

034 Motorsport Transmission Mount will solve this issue. $80 plus shipping and totally worth the money. It really helps eliminate the upswing of the transmission and makes shifts much smoother and crisp and quick. I kept reading everyone rave about it so I bought it and everything they say is true. It really makes a difference in the way the transmission feels.

I felt the same thing you're explaining when I first got my Q and for the next 1.5 years after... Once I put the 034 mount on it has gone away.

Idk why it shifts slower when first started but 10/15 minutes after starting the engine all is well

...as do I. It makes the speed shifts a little better but it does absolutely nothing for this issue, which is apparently related to cold weather.
You can warm your engine all you want, but the tranny doesn't warm up until you use it.
So yeah...tranny mount's good, but it does not address this problem at all.

Damn, bought the tranny mount but still no car (3-2-15 port ??)
If it doesn't help in Dallass cold, won't do much in Chicago area deep freeze. Low was -8 last night ⛄️

The tranny mount does what it claims, but this issue has to due with the tranny itself.
Perhaps it's because the fluid is cold.

    Wait...I have a climate-controlled garage. It stays around 60F.
    This obviously requires further investigation.

The 034 mount did not seem to make a difference in my case either. This transmission will let you shift into second at a couple of MPH if you stay at idle and let the torque converter move the car. Then short shift into 3rd as well. That gets me past the initial warmup issues.

Hmm, I have a heated garage as well. Guess I will have to try Topcarbon's solution.

The transmission mount definitely helps but when cold the changes are very slow, I agree it must be to do with the transmission fluid warming or something.

I know the 03M mount works because entering my drive in second and then giving it some gas the car always used to lurch at the same place...it still lurches a bit but now its consistently a few meters sooner...

Regardless of mount, in the morning the changes are slow and the clutch really slips...but it's fine after around a mile..

For another reference point, the S-Tronic (DSG/Dual-clutch) gearbox in my 2011 S4 also behaves oddly for the first mile or so in extreme cold.

However, I don't consider this to be a "problem" because EVERYTHING behaves differently at 10 below Zero F!

I'm going to try setting the parking brake to complete my morning warm up in drive.
My thinking is that it should warm and circulate the fluid before starting to move.

I borrowed a B8 RS4 for a weekend thanks to my local Audi dealer and I have to say the S-Tronic is so much better than the T-Tronic...so much better!
