Will AWE resonated downpipes get rid of the drone aroun 2.5K RPM?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have an AWE Track exhaust right now and it sounds great. At first, I didn't think it was loud enough so I was planning to delete the resonators up front. However, for the first time yesterday, I drove 100 miles cruising around 70 MPH and the drone is horrible at 2.5K RPM! I got back home and had a headache from the noise. The drone is almost as bad as my IS350 when it was straight-piped. Only difference is that my IS was twice as loud from the outside but the drone inside both cars is just really bad. Certainly not going to get rid of the resonators now. For those who got the AWE resonated downpipes, how much of the drone did it get rid of between the 2-3K range and did it quiet the car down from the outside? I really want the car louder but the drone is really bad.

If its DSG it says on their site that not running their resonated downpipes with their exhaust will increase drone in cars....

These kinds of threads are so hard to answer because everyone's hearing is subjective. I'm sure there is a Chicago member around with this setup that may be able to take you for a ride so you can get a feeler. I always recommend the non resonated on the 6 speed cars

That's true. Since I'm use to loud cars, I went with the Track version over the Touring. The outside isn't loud enough for me but inside the cabin, once I hit 2.5K while cruising at 60-70 MPH, the drone is so bad. Under acceleration, I love the sound but it's the drone while cruising.

Just wanting to see if anyone who went from stock downpipes to resonated downpipes can provide some feedback. Specifically how much drone was reduced in the 2-3K range and how much quieter it made the exhaust overall. Trying to rid of some drone but not the loudness outside.

Have the same problem but i have DSG. Cruising drone is too loud for me.

Need to find out if getting downpipes is worth it, if not might have to get rid of the exhaust.

I hated the 70mph in 6th drone on my 6MT without the DPs. I got the res DPs and added dynomat to the rear deck. Life is good now. More then just a chance in decibels the DPs change the tone to be less "buzzy"

Yes, the AWE resonated downpipes will help to reduce in cabin drone and mellow out the sound on both AT and MT cars.

Let me do my best to help you make a decision on a course of action, I want to make sure you are happy with your AWE Tuning exhaust!

We offer two version of our downpipes and two versions of our exhaust (Track Edition and Touring Edition) to give everyone the best range of options to choose from.

The major advantage of the Touring Edition system is the mufflers incorporating our 180 Technology™. This technology specifically targets droning and minimizes it as much as possible.

Our Resonated Downpipes feature larger than the stock resonators in order to produce a more mellow sound volume while still increasing power. While they WILL help reduce the negative feedback, they do not incorporate the 180 Technology™ which specifically addresses droning to a greater level.

Interested in going with the Resonated Downpipes? You have one full year from the date of Downpipe-Back system purchase to buy the complementing downpipes, for the price difference between the Downpipe-Back system alone and the package price (price at the time of downpipe purchase). This is for original owners only, and is valid through AWE Tuning directly or through any authorized AWE Tuning dealer, so long as proof of the original Downpipe-Back purchase can be provided.

I hope this helped to give more insight into our S4 exhaust line, if you have any questions, please ask!

Agreed, a lot of the drone stems right from the factory down pipes as they are a restriction. Get rid of this restriction and allow the exhaust to flow freely.

Ok guys. I have a full AWE touring exhaust with resonated down pipes. I have a DSG. During crusing at letigment hwy speeds nothing above 85 mph. I have 0 and I mean 000000000 drone at all. The exhaust is maybe a few decibels over factory exhaust. If you pay attension you know its there but not annoying. But it does drone don't get me wrong. But where it drones you are never in that rpm while crusing ever. Unless you are crusing around 90. Id say there is a little drone around 2200 rpm till about 2500 rpm and its gone. Honestly it doesn't even bother me at all because your not cruising near there.

I have to hand it to AWE, this is a Fantastic exhaust setup. It sounds amazing. But the only down side is the price. The price of over 2400 bux sux the big one. I don't think its worth the price. But that's just me.

Non resonated downpipes will make the exhaust louder, deeper, and these cars don't really get raspy in my opinion. But your car is DSG so I would recommend the resonated down pipes even with the touring exhaust since I get the sense you're pretty concerned about drone.

I don't have the track exhaust, but my awe touring exhaust with oem downpipes and DSG only drones MILDLY if I drive like a granny. The drone is more apparent when I have heavy set friends with me in the car. My fix is going WOT 1 or 2 times. After that, the drone is gone for the duration of the drive. Could be because I'm partially deafened by the brwaaaaaap sound at WOT, though.

The in-cabin sound is one thing, but the sound outside the car is music to my ears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrfwegrhRMc

That is a great video, very good representation of the sound. Do you have an in-cabin one?

Just installed my touring today and driving on the highway around 80 in 7th the drone is crazy loud. Maybe it needs some time to break in but I'm ready to buy the resonated DP now.

It sounds amazing on the streets but most of my commute to work is highway for 20 miles. I don't think I could

I just had my rear mufflers on my touring replaced with straight pipes to make it "track." I love the sound of it, but as everyone has stated the drone within 2.3k-2.6k is horrible! I even adddd murdermat to the trunk and it didn't do much

What version S4 do you have. They changed the gear ratio with the B8.5's thats y i probably don't have it. But Im not at 80 that often. Max speed limit around here is 65. So i do 75 most of the time. But i have 0 drone with the awe dp's

I have a 2013 and do mostly highway driving so constantly at 80mph. I pulled the sound fuse today which helped a lot in lower gears but still drone around 2k. Still In love with the system but I will most likely end up buying the resonates down pipes at some point. Going to let the exhaust break in and add it to my "to do list" after rs4 grille, AG wheels, awe dp, and ecs rotors.

I have read that this system tones down quite a bit after a 1000 mile break-in period. Something to keep in mind...

I am considering the AWE resonated downpipes with the track exhaust, but I am trying to figure out 2 things....

    1. how is drone on a 2013 6MT with that setup?
    2. will an emissions inspection be effected by that setup?

Depends on what your emissions inspection entails. Here in MD they just pug in any obd 2 car and see if it has any codes in it. If you have no codes you pass. But with modifying anything after the converters you will not cause any codes to set. But I can't see them failing you for the exhaust. It does nothing for emissions. its after all emissions components.

I'm bumping this post again. The 180 Technology equipped resonators in our Touring system are the most important aspect of our exhausts when factoring in droning. This system is engineered specifically to reduce drone as much as possible.

Feel free to PM me and I can do my best to advise you on what combination will work best for you!

Can you please tell me if the two back boxes were always stamped awe 180 technology as the second hand system I bought is not. But the centre box is.
