    2012 A6 3.0 Prestige - Should I extend Warranty?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

I bought a 2012 A6 Prestige in December(48k miles). I am 500 miles away from losing the factory warranty and I needed some opinions about getting Manufacturer's Extended Warranty(Preferably Gold Plus).

Do you guys think it's worth it? Do I need it? If I try and take good care of her? Or should I just find a good honest mechanic and be on good terms with him incase something did happen in the future!

    Thanks!

Have you gotten price quotes yet? I had CPO extended warranty with my A7 but sold it before I could make use of it (so it was wasted money).

For 3yrs /36k miles - Best price from an Audi dealer was

    100$ deductible => Around 3800 + Tax
    250$ deductible => Around 3400 + Tax

Exact prices are in my notebook at home..

What issues has the car had previous to you buying? If it's been relatively problem free, I'd pass on the warranty. My BMW ran up its warranty last year, and the prices were right around what you have listed. I put that money into a separate account for issues as I couldn't justify dropping nearly $4K just for piece of mind.

I'd pass. I think it will cost you less to pay out of pocket.

Right and I normally care for my car at least twice a year, checking all fluids and stuff. The car has been problem free and clean on Carfax at least. There were 8 records and it was the regular maintenance. No issues encountered! It's a beauty and I've heard the C7 3.0T are solidly built. Also I am a pretty low mileage driver. But roads can get bad in the winters! #OHIO

Call Troy at http://fd-warranty.com/aboutus.html for pricing on fidelity plans. That was where I got mine and he had the best pricing that I could find.

I think you answered your own question - if the car hasn't had issues, and hasn't given you issues up to now, what is your $3k+ buying you? My vote is you put that money into an account and enjoy the car.

This pricing is pretty solid, at about half price if it were a new car.
If the car had prior issues I would look into a service contract, but if not it's a gamble you can probably take. I always suggest Audi Care, and in your case Audi Care Plus.... because it costs about 90 bucks just to change the oil in your car.

Yes sir, It drives magnificent, carfax is clean, just regular maintenance records. It's just that insurance and peace of mind I guess. But based on everyone's opinions I can take a call :)

I am looking at Audi Care plus now... Is it like it covers just 3 maintenance intervals or will they take care of it if there was excess oil consumed at the middle of one of the intervals?

As in If I had a maintenance at 55k, and my next one is at 65k... If I encounter oil issues at 60k, would they take it in and do a thorough check again? I am new to Audi, so please don't mind if any question seems dumb :)

Not a dumb question at all. The Plus program is exactly like the original Care program just later mileage. So, if your car drinks an extra quart I do no believe they would take it in again early without it counting as another service.

AudiCare only covers scheduled service intervals, i.e., 15, 25, 35, 45, 55k, etc. I'm debating an extended warranty now via USAA and I'm looking at $3500 for 5 years or 100k, whichever comes first with no deductible on a 2013 S6 with 24k on the odometer.

Which I need to call and cross verify :) I have no clue how much a Standard oil change + tyre rotation costs... So basically for an A6 it's like 1130 plus taxes.. quite a lot as they charge extra for parts and stuff right?

From what I have seen, there's a lot of good reviews about fd-warranty .. Costs around 1000$ cheaper than Audi extended warranty but its the exact same thing. U might wanna check it out! A lot of people suggest sticking to Fidelity(which is Audi's partner I believe)

Troy sells audi care and audi care plus. I got my audi care through him. Audi care used without any charges or problems.

Negative. Audicare covers parts and labor but only for the scheduled maintenance. Any wear and tear items and warranty stuff would be separate.

I wonder what effect the TD1 flag has on these after market extended warranty companies. If you extend your warranty with USAA and tune your car, will USAA know? Wouldn't Audi have to tell them for them to know? and if your car is out of factory warranty, you would never need to get a spec scan...?

I think it would only matter if your car was still under Audi factory warranty and you tried to make a claim with USAA. Of course they would say, "Well, why isn't Audi covering it?"

Once the factory warranty is expired, I don't think they would ever look or know.

Certainly something to think about, I am waiting for ~90% of the warranty to be up before doing much tuning, but would love an extended warranty after I start

Not sure if this is 100% but...

    Me:

    Hello,
I recently purchased an Audi A6 3.0T Prestige C7. I’ve been reading a lot of the forums for Audis/VW and have read much about the work your shop does, which is good thing because I live right up the street. I had a question that maybe you could help me out with or point me in the right direction. Currently my A6 has 36k miles on it and still under factory warranty. It’s my understanding that the APR Stage 2 upgrade w/ Pulley will void my factory warranty, but I was curious if you happened to know if it would void my extended warranty from USAA? The policy FAQ says:

The USAA Extended Vehicle Protection program may not cover repairs under the following conditions:
    • If the vehicle has not been maintained according to manufacturer's specifications and instructions.
    • If the repair is still covered by the manufacturer warranty or covered by a recall or special policy by the manufacturer.
    • If the vehicle is used as a commercial vehicle used for, but not limited to, off-road use or snow removal.
On vehicles with modifications not recommended by the manufacturer including, but not limited to, use of oversized tires, header pipes or any removal of any emission control system components.
    • On vehicles used for policy or law enforcement services, fire, ambulance or emergency services, taxi, limousine or shuttle services, pick-up and/or delivery operations, racing, newspaper or mail delivery, rental services, construction, security services, snow removal or snow plowing, cable or line installation or hauling for hire.
If it’s any help, I have the higher coverage, Comprehensive. I am not sure if you had encountered anyone with a similar policy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Them:

Kenneth, it should not void the USAA exended warranty.
    Thanks!!

Unless you straight up go to USAA and say "my engine is tuned", they will have no idea or suspicion.

That would be my guess as well. The USAA language does prohibit tuning, so out of an abundance of caution, it might be worth doing the flash back to stock dance. Otherwise, if you have a solid relationship with your service advisor, doubt they'd ever find out.

I got a quote from Troy before checking with USAA. For the same price with USAA I would get 5 years or 100k with zero deductible, compared to 5yrs/60k with $100 deductible from fd-warranty. My next step would be to compare the coverage and see if fd somehow covers more stuff. I'm definitely leaning towards an extended warranty of some sort as my plan is to keep the car for at least 5 years and the factory warranty runs out in less than 2 years/25k. I can't imagine the repair bill on this thing if crap starts failing.

My '14 S6 with 4000 miles was a CPO... I added the Platinum $0 deductible "wrap" to the CPO coverage, which essentially is the same as your factory bumper-to-bumper warranty, for 8yr/100K. Cost was $3400. I figure for that price and coverage, with $0 deductible, can't go wrong?

I suppose so! It's worth it on the long run! Especially if you plan on keeping it a long time! I am still confused about it.. Most people saying I should just keep the money in the bank.

    Well, it's basically like insurance...

Most of us have it (because it's required by law), and you typically never use it... but man, when you DO need it, it sure is nice to have! So, then it comes down to the simple question... Would spending the money for the warranty give you piece of mind owning the car for an extended period of time? And is that piece of mind worth the price? If yes, then even if you NEVER use it or get all your money back for what would have been repairs, it was still worth it to you.

That's how I look at it. Worth it to me on a car where ANY electrical issue down the road could pay for itself in one fail swoop. Too many computers and automatic functions in this damn car to assume it's not going to have SOME sort of issues down the road, minor or major.

That's my concern with the S6. Between the suspension, adaptive this and that, thermal cameras, etc...one or more major failures would be a financial disaster.

It's an educated gamble - if you had originally posted that your car had numerous problems over the years, I'd change my stance on you getting the warranty. I'm big on history of a car. No problem in the past doesn't necessarily mean none in the future, but trend wise, I'm not as worried about going out of warranty given your description. Like others have said, no right or wrong answer as it's a personal call. The way I think is the majority of those who buy warranty don't ever get the full value out of it. Of course the other end of the coin is you use well over the value of what you paid, making you a winner but I'd risk it if I were you. Or, I'd take that $3K+ and start shopping for a CPO S6

True, I mean most often things don't happen out of chance.. Something generally blows, as a result of something else that was not taken care of, right? So If I do my bit and be proactive with my car maintenance, I should be ok right? I'm 400 miles away from 50k.. haha

Looking at the carfax, I noticed that at 30700 miles, the A/C compressor was replace and the Fuel Rail was replaced. Is this a part of normal maintenance or is it a red flag?

There is no right or wrong answer on this. I just bought a A6 Prestige 2012 with 48,500 miles and paid $4k for a 3yr 90k (total odometer) bumper to bumper. It's peace of mind. If I sell the car or don't have a claim I can use it as a selling tool or get some pro rated money back. In my opinion it's nuts to own a German car with so much technology without a warranty. One fix and you can be 50% paid back on the warranty.

I have seen this on a bunch of early production a7's I am looking at...part of me says if the part is replaced and there is a problem down the line, AOA should step in and facilitate a replacement post warranty.

Pretty sure something AC related was replaced on my S6 under warranty near the 15k service by the previous owner. I had a B6 S4 that pretty much gave me no trouble until the 50k, and then all hell broke loose. I concur with the general sentiment that owning a German car, much less one with this much technology, without an extended warranty is crazy unless (a) you don't plan on keeping it much longer than the factory warranty; or (b) you are capable of executing these repairs yourself. I'm into my car for potentially 5 years - longer with a second play car if it's still running solidly after 5 years. I'll be getting a warranty.

Don't know about gold, platinum, premier, etc. get the top of the line that covers everything including the Nav, sensors, etc.
