Changing out the fuel pump. Do I need to order one of these, too?

Hey guys,

I asked this question over on the S4 forum, but didn't get any replies.

I'm installing a new fuel pump in the S4 this weekend. Do I also need something called a fuel pump cap? I've never heard of anyone else using that during this job...and the DIY I found on the Audiworld forums doesn't mention it.

I did order the seal that fits between the pump and the tank, though.

for 13 bucks since its not a metal part I would do it even if it wasn't necessary. And just going off the description, "Genuine OEM fuel pump cap which will keep the fuel from overflowing out of the in tank fuel pump and all over your interior" so if it ever failed I'm gathering fuel would go all over the interior?

Also I'm wondering why you are replacing it? Did you have an issue or is this just preventive maintenance, like is there a recommended miles the pump is changed on the 3.0?

No you don't need it unless you are doing a returnless -> return fuel system or something. As long as everything is OEM-like (drops right in) you're fine.

Unfortunately, this is NOT preventative maintenance, and it's not on my 3.0. It's on my 4.2 The fuel pump is groaning/grinding when cranking the engine over. Fairly common issue on the B6 S4.

Just wanted to give a shout out and a huge thanks to genuineaudiparts.com. As I said before, they sent me an email telling me that this cap was a required part to replace. I replied back and told them to please add it to my order, but the email bounced. The email address they used to communicate to me was one of those "do not reply" types.

Anyway, the order showed up yesterday, and to my surprise, they threw the cap in for free! Now, that's customer service.
