Anyone have experience with changing windshields on rs5. ?
    Oem Audi 665.00 installed
Rain sensor, solar tint , greying of glass, sound suppression ( laminate plastic)

Pilkington oem like sans sound suppression . 289.00 installed

I have a hard time thinking the plastic laminate makes that big a difference. Would like feedback from board .

Check out this thread. Most people say absolutely go with OEM glass.

I had to replace mine a few months ago, and was referred to the guy that does all of the windshield repairs for DFW Audi. He came to my home to fix it and was cheaper going that route than going through the dealer. He will do Audi OEM glass.

All of my research led me to conclude that Audi glass is the only way to go. The aftermarket OEM is not the same.

If you will give me a day to look his info up at home, I'll get it to you.

The guy that actually did the install told me that the Audis are the easiest to change due to the way they are installed - take off wipers and two trim pieces and cut the sealant, lift glass off.

Can't even tell it's been changed on mine.

Got it - Richardson's Auto Glass of Fort Worth, 817-498-1700, www.ragfw.com. It will run you about $700, but you can do it through insurance with no hit to your rates.

(Do not confuse it with Richardson Auto Glass, richardsonautoglass.com. Not the same thing.)

Richardson auto glass off central and spring valley quoted the 665.00 for oem Audi
Also quoted the 285.00 for Pilkington aftermarket to Oem specs with all but the acoustic portion. I called my Audi service advisor while he can't come out and say not to buy the Audi part he certainly couldn't tell me I could tell the difference . I appreciate all the feedback pros and cons. My insurance will pick up 165.00 of the 665.00 really no reason to make claim.

No Ibis white black interior '13 running Xpel full front clip Aleu kruez, skn stage 2 ecu, milltek exhaust. Car has been flawless with almost 20,000 miles.
This windshield question is driving me nuts if u live in a Dallas the endless freeway construction ( Sinacola Trucks) windshields get abused terribly. The links to the windshield question to me gets down to will I notice 2-3 decibels? Is that really the difference in conversational ability? Stereo now has to be at 20 instead of 18 ? 2-3 decibels is too abstract for me to relate. Helppppp lol

Couldn't tell from your avatar the color. I was followed yesterday on the Bush in N. Dallas for a while by a Suzuka RS5, the first I've ever seen on the road.

As for the windshield, mine cracked just a couple months after I bought the car and I wanted to keep it OEM. I read about some downsides to the aftermarket glass, such as thinner construction and resistance to chipping, and decided not to skimp considering it's a $80K car. The $500 deductible, while a significant sum, just wasn't going to be the deal killer.

I try to stay off the roads under construction. For example, I took the Bush from South Arlington all the way up to DNT and then down to Galleria just to avoid 35 and 635.

Sound passing through automobile windows contribute greatly to interior noise.

The decibel scale is logarithmic. A three dB increase represents double the stimulus (noise).

    I lol'd at this thread..

A windshield for my 2005 A8, from the dealer was quoted at $997. Yes, $997..... No insurance as the dealer doesn't work with insurance I would have to find a way to get it covered on my own. I could just imagine my insurance company in shock for me trying to get that covered.

Anyways, I went to my local reputable auto glass shop and had the windshield installed for free, they waived my deductible cost. Mind you the A8 was much more involved than my S5, had the light detector as well as the rain sensor. No difference between OEM besides saving a huge amount of cash.

550.00 is best price by far for installed accoustic windshield. Was it z national chain that had the OEM glass?

I recently got my windshield replaced, like 1.5 weeks ago. I didn't go with OEM Audi glass, I didn't want to come out of pocket for the difference. I am already paying enough for insurance and figured I would take it for what I was paying for. I got Pilkington glass and there is NO sound difference. I talked with the installer while he put it and he told me Audis and the other high end German cars actually use a different type of glue that helps keep out noise.

Id rather spend $500 towards a K04 not a windshield. Another thing is, no one who buys your car isn't going to buy it from you because it doesn't have an OEM windshield.

I just looked at mine and it says Laminate on it, so mine has the sound suppression.

+1. The "OEM" windshield crap was blown out of proportion.

To each their own. I follow @Mojo31 point of view in that its a RS5 -- if I have any doubt about the aftermarket glass and can't afford the OE windshield to save a regret later down the line then I shouldn't have the car. In the end, it's costing me $736 out of pocket because Texas doesn't believe in $50 deductibles for glass -- it's the normal $500 deductible. I'm not going to report this to insurance to save $236 only to potentially pay it exponentially further down the line.

That $650 is either the wrong OE glass or not OE glass at all. Do you have rain sense wiper?

Richardson auto glass was about 650-700 for OEM glass. They have changed many, too many windshields for me. Dallas is a graveyard for windshields rock trucks and speed limits of 70+ . Owning Rs5 aside the North Dallas Tollway isn't for the faint of heart. My xpel finally met a rock. (1) in 20,000 miles that punctured the film I am crestfallen. Great stuff but now I have (1) chip in all of front end arrrrrgggghhhhhhh. I want it fixed but damn it is right above hood edge on a one piece hood installation . Arrrrgghhhh again Arrrghhhhh laughing
