    Help me decide. 2016 A7 or 2016 S6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Help me decide which car to order. Here is what I'm considering.

Audi A7 TDI Looks ranked a 10 to me…super sexy and you don’t see one every day. Very flexible design/highly practical. Drives at about a 8 of 10 compared to the S6. TDI is very quick (can be tuned), great MPG. Perfect marriage of motor to the ZF 8 Speed transmission. I would get this in Glacier White Metallic. Amazing car.

    How I would build it.

    Prestige package $74,525
    Drivers assist 2,450
    19’ sport package 1,000
    Night vision 2,500
    B and O stereo 4,900
    soft close doors 500

    Total $85,875

Audi S6 Looks ranked at about a 7. The car blends in. Which is also good. Really nice looking but it is conservative. Drives like a 10. 0-60 in less than 4 seconds (it’s a rocket). Same engine as what is in a Bentley. Can be easily tuned for more. I love DSG transmissions and this one has it. Sports car brakes. Able to get carbon fiber interior. Diamond stitched seats (like in a Ferrari).

    My choices for my build.

    Prestige package $76,775
    Drivers assist 2,250
Sport package 3,500 (basically an aftermarket exhaust, torque vectoring differential, Audi dynamic steering)
    Carbon fiber 500
This one has a 14 speaker bose stereo with 600 watts
    $83,025

If you add the B and O stereo $87,925 (high end of my price range)

    Remove sport pack/keep B and O $84,425

    Remove B & O /add night vision $85,525

So this is my problem. I need to be close to $85,000.

First..which car do I go with? I can get all the options I would want on the A7 TDI including crazy expensive stereo. Have a car that I really enjoy driving and love love love the way it looks. I cannot get it in a red or blue that I like so the next best choice is Glacier white.

Or do I go with the S6. I would have to give up on an option or two…but which ones are must haves and what should I drop? But I’m sure it drives much better, stops better, 0-60 is blistering. I can get it in the color I love…Sepang blue. It’s more of a sleeper…kinda like my current car.

    Options I'm considering.

I’m thinking of maybe not getting the night vision. Although it’s a interesting technology I have never hit a deer or a person in my life and those are the 2 items this feature tries to warn you of. But it’s really cool stuff and would probably have fun with it.

I feel I would need to have the sport package…I’m sure the exhaust would be amazing and at the same time the sport differential is a must have…I have it in my S4 and it really helps around the corners.

The B and O is crazy expensive. I have heard some people don’t like the Bose but I think most of the complainers want huge bass (like for hip hop music). I have not heard it yet. Maybe I will think it’s OK. It was the high end stereo before they decided to offer a $5,900 stereo with the B and O. For 2016 they are dropping the price of the B and O by $1,000 to $4,900. It’s supposed to be an audiophiles dream. I love music. So maybe it’s worth it. Although I’m sure you will never get it’s cost back at trade in.

FYI…2 options I don’t have listed for the S6 are…Cold weather. The reason why this one is not on my list is because (I believe) when you add the heated wheel you loose the flat bottom wheel and get a round one. I love a flat bottom wheel. I don't have heated wheel in my S4 so I would not miss it.

I also do not have the contour seats built. These are arguably the most comfortable seats in the car business. 22 way adjustment, cooling, massage, etc. I have sat in them and they truly are something special. But since I have never owned them you cannot miss something you have never had. Plus the diamond stitched seats are already pretty amazing even though they don’t offer as many adjustments or cooling (which is really just a fan blowing air).

I'm 50/ 50 on each car. I know I would be extremely happy with either one.

I drive about 30,000 miles a year. I do enjoy a great on/off ramp and the ability to blow by almost any other car on the road. But I will never track the car. I do love the balance of a 5.5 second car that gets almost 40 MPG on the highway. And the beauty of the A7, to me, is amazing.

    So…what do you guys think??????

    Thank you for the perspective.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. (sorry for the long post).

I had an A7, traded it in, now going back to Audi for a Sepang Blue S6. The A7 just didn't feel sporty enough for me. I don't track my cars either btw.

I would personally skip the night vision especially if you're trying to get to a number. As for B&O, how true of an audiophile are you? What do you usually use for source audio? I like good music but I like the convenience of Bluetooth streaming and just use spotify to pull it down. For me, Bose is good enough but others want more. My personal opinion is that more people that get the B&O that say they are audiophiles are not necessarily but there's a prestige factor to it since it's the best "stock" option. The people I know who are true audiophiles want to build their own systems and can do it cheaper than the B&O upgrade price.

As for 6 vs 7, that's a personal choice and it sounds like you're leaning toward 7. I went with S6 but I personally can't get used to the back of the 7 which is what 7 owners really like. It's all personal preference.

S6. the A7 is not going to provide you what you're looking for. Everything else you want can be added in aftermarket.

but a Twin Turbo V8? it is a dying breed. It is precisely the reason I went with the S7 over other models.

I'm confused. Is there no S7 next year? Why not just get that? You get the looks you want plus the performance.

I'm assuming the s7 is above the OPs budget? It sounds like a loaded A7 and an S6 are about equally priced. The S7 is one tempting bad @ss beast though. Highly debating stepping into that from my S4, but still not sure Id like to move up to a larger ride.

S7 costs more than the S6 for some odd reason.

because of perception. Why does 435xi cost more than 335xi? Manufacturing process doesn't deviate that much.

to me, personally? it boils down to what you love. I love the front of the S7 and in the next few years plan to change the rear to the 2016 valance + lights. (sorry the 2016 front just doesn't do it for me)

I liked the S6, but that sloping saloon shape on the S7 is so beautiful.

however, in the same light, if i had to pick the V8T from the C7-S's vs a TDI? I'd then pick the S6 over that engine. Think about it, while it's not the same this style of V8 with Turbos in the inlet is the new fad (AMG GT goes this route too and it's 4.0L).

    I had a 2013 A6 that I traded it for the 2014 S6.

    1. Don't get night vision unless you drive in an area with lots of woodland creatures/roads that have crosswalks with no traffic light.
    2. B&O is great, but depending on the type of music you listen to you may or may not get the benefits. I didn't have it in my A6, have it in my S6 and if money stood in the way I would drop the B&O for the S6.
    3. TDI is great but on short/city drives the MPG can be just as bad, you also have to worry about your particulate filter.
    4. The A7 may seem very practical but you can't sit full sized adults in the rear. My head hit the roof.
    5. IMO the front end of the 6 looks much more aggressive than the 7, you have that subtle "I can rip your face off" look. ;)
    6. Dat 4.0T doe... its so much fun and I get between 22 and 28 MPG (thanks to cylinder deactivation).

Simply put, while the A7 TDI is great the S6 is that much better.

The 7 costing more has a lot to do with the hatch and the body. The body panels are more sculpted and bigger. The car is almost 2" wider than the 6. The hatch is also fully automatic up and down.

S6 easily. I like the styling of the 7 better. But I will take performance over looks any day In this situation. I'm actually somewhat surprised you can get them for the same price. After having an S and driving several A series, I couldn't see myself investing in anything less than an S.

Everyone is all the same when it comes to price of regular sedan and 4 doors coupe/hatchback on the same platform. To give the same perspective, BMW 550i price starts at $64,900 while 640i Gran Coupe starts at whopping $78,300.

I'm almost certain all C7 S6s came with sport differential standard as does dynamic air suspension. (At least US-spec models do).

You're right, for 2016 it is now part of the sport package which also adds the sports exhaust. I had checked on audiusa.com but it still shows 2015 configurations. Fortunately the OP already included the sport package in his options for the S6, but I agree 100% with you, sport differential is a critical component for quattro cars and levels a lot of the playing field with the other RWD Germans.

I had it on my B8 S4 as well, it was more noticable there than in the S6, but regardless, it is a magical component. My S4 was manual and I drove it a bit harder, so maybe time will allow me to better utilize the S6's sport differential. Regrettably, my wife has been in the car all too much recently...

Interestingly I feel the opposite. SD was less noticeable on the B8 S4 and now I notice it more on the larger S6. Perhaps it is also from my experiences with my C6 A6 which had the similar size but the handling prowess of neither.

You know. I drive nearly 30k per year. I personally couldn't justify spending 85k on the s6. You will lose close to 25k in the first year. I couldn't find cpo s6s at the time so I got an a6. Instead I rather buy a cpo rs7 for 85k in a year or two. Or go pick up an s6 cpo. You get 100k mile warranty!

Currently, according to Autotrader there are only 3 CPO Audi S6 for sale in the USA, all are black (2013-2016). It looks the same situation, not much available.

    Overall only 14 used S6 available & 26 new ones (2013-2016).

    Hi Guys,

Thank you for all your input and ideas to consider. I appreciate it.

I spent 2 hours at the dealership yesterday. They did not have a S6 or S7 for me to drive. But I did drive the A8 with the 4.0 TFSI right after I drove a A6 with a sport package.

Let me say that the test drive was all it took to confirm all that you said here...the motor in that car is amazing. It will be just that much better when hooked up to the DSG.

That engine is truly a marvel of engineering.

I was part of the B8 S4 forum since the beginning of that platform. I even started a Facebook Fan page for that chassis.

I'm looking forward to sharing and learning more and more from you all regarding the C7 platform.

My order will likely get placed at the end of this week.

    Thank you again.

That's pretty much what I did. They had a S7 I was supposed to test but sold it a day or two before I got there. I tested the S4 for the DSG and the A8 for the 4.0T.

i think there are still too many that they cannot update.

sounds like to me, they will update when they start arriving on shore - which is in about 3-4 weeks

I looked for a long time, finding a used S6 was very tough. I could much more easily find S7s, but over the past 3-4 months I'd notice an S6 pop up once in a while, but it wouldn't be on autotrader more than a few days. Just looking right now at the four major Texas cities (Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio), there are six S7s and one S6 (three of the S7s are certified, the S6 is not).

Hopefully there'll be more later in the year. But assuming not very many are sold in general.
