B8 newbie question - how to tell if a car is chipped and has a pulley

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am looking at a used 2013 S4 at a dealer (not audi), it has an AWE intake and AWE exhaust. How can I tell if it is chipped? I assume it is, but how do I tell if it has a pulley? I was thinking I could use a caliper to see, but don't know the diameters... I have a hook up at Audi - so I will see if it is TD1, but I am curious about what software it has and if it has a pulley...

Maybe someone could put up a pic of stock pulley vs Stage 2 pulley. I'm sure you can see difference by the naked eye.

Easy test: take it for a test drive, let it get nice and warm (take it on the highway for 10 or so minutes.) Find a safe road, and do a 0-60mph/0-100km/h test. If it's around 5s then there's no chip. If it's faster than 5s then it's got a chip.

That is kinda hard to do that with the salesperson in the car.

It is almost certainly chipped, I am wondering what software it has, what version, and if it is stage 1 or stage 2 with a pulley. I assume my VAG-Com wont help at all. The exhaust makes it hard to tell, the sound gives the illusion of being faster than the stock ones I drove. My butt dyno is not so good and it is way slower than my last few cars....

Maybe you can try and contact AWE/GIAC and provide them with the chassis number to see which map the car is having.

The car does sub 5 seconds 0-60 stock so therefore that test is irrelevant. If its CPO I'd assume its not tuned or it would be TD1.

pulley is a smaller diameter than stock if it has an aftermarket pulley - stock is 2 3/4"

couldn't it have an aftermarket pulley and have been wiped clean of software?

knowing pulley size does not tell the whole story IMO

Stock we're technically 4.9s 0-60, not gonna notice that. With any stage of tune it will be noticeably faster than that.

Put your gear in neutral and rev it. If it stops at 4k, then no chip. If it revs all the way, then it's chipped.

Also, go full throttle on an open road. If it goes past 155 mph, chipped.

B8 newbie question - how to tell if a car is chipped and has a pulley

I would be surprised if former owner/leasee returned the car in tuned mode because it may impact warranty and thus resell value. If it is tuned by GIAC, they license by vin. As others have said, call them and give the vin. Not sure about APR, but they may help if you call them and provide the vin.

Measuring the pulley before you buy or getting the dealer to dyno the car requires to many calories. Good luck with that advice. Also, I would want to know how many time launch control has been used, subtracted from 200 to determine how many launches remain.

You will love the car either way. Good luck.

Thinking because it is not at an Audi dealer it may have been TD1 and not able to be CPO, so Audi dealer didn't want it and lease company auctioned it hence ending up at non audi dealer. Also thinking it is a 2013 and therefore too new for a typical 3 year lease return (could have been a 2 year lease) but thinking maybe it was traded for another brand after a couple years and that is why it is on another dealers lot and no reason to wipe the software, if it was a lease return the the intake and exhaust would have had to been removed also.

So going with trade in for another brand, guy was too lazy to remove and sell mods, so if exhaust and intake is still there, tune and pulley are also - big question is what tune and what stage though - it is most likely Revo, Giac or APR maybe EPL.

Story was that he traded it in to this dealer for a larger car (against his will, needed more room for a car seats) He was the second owner and the one that modded it. I do not think this dealer has any idea that it has so many mods. My head says stay away, but I just gotta have it...

I am calling the tuners now with the VIN and trying to get TD1 status.

vin check at a dealer would only tell you if it was td1. i can assure you that isnt the best way to check

Ryan qttro was able to tell me it was not TD1. I called AWE and found out that about 8 months ago the previous owner dropped it off and got an AWE tune, pulley, trans tune, coldfront system, intake, touring exhaust with resonated downpipes (and it has SPM 6-pot alcons 380mm!!??)

Needless to say i left work early and bought it. Lol i drove it home tonight!!!

Im back in the Audi family, its been 8 years since my B5 with k24s... This car doesnt feel as fast as my B5, but its a hell of alot nice!

    Thanks again everyone!

Congrats on the great fine man. Must of sucked for the previous owner who was barely able to have fun after dropping several K's on the car.
