Question Front Wheel Brake Caliper Clearance

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I currently have stock HP2 front calipers. Can someone tell me if I can increase the clearance for my wheels by going to a different brake kit? If so, how much clearance can be gained with the various kits?

One of the better and cheapest upgrades for maximum clearance is getting B6/7 S4 brakes. The clearance they have for wheels compared to hp2s is incredible. They bolt right up and they use 345mm rotors which is even better

I'm assuming this is because of the rpf1 group buy wheels?

My old Meisters required shaving down stock hp2s about 5mm and running 3mm spacers and barely cleared, a credit card wouldn't even fit. With the B6 S4 brakes I had about 15mm of clearance without spacers.

    Here's a picture of my friends B7 S4 with rpf1s, no spacers.

    Thanks for the great info!

Good to know B6/7 S4 calipers will allow me to "gain" about 15mm so space.

Going to have to get myself some B6/B7 S4 brakes. Just need to find a set.

Do any other cars have the same brake setup like the A6 or something?

    ::EDIT::

These cars have the setup that will work.

B6 A4 calipers are direct swap BUT use the B5 S4 disc...No improvement in braking will be seen, possibly detrimental to performance I believe (correct me if wrong)

I wish I just had spoke clearance issues. TTRS brakes tend to hit the inner barrel of most 18" wheels, as they were originally made for 19" wheels.

I personally see no cons in upgrading to b6/7 s4 calipers. They're direct bolt one, use larger rotors (321mm vs 345mm) and you gain amazing wheel clearance.

Another option that I was telling nsanes4 about was using B7 A4 calipers. They're essentially the same calipers as b6/7 s4 ones, they just have a little curve on the edges of the face, but internally they're the same. Also the b7 a4 calipers run smaller carriers because b7 a4s have 321mm rotors which are same size as stock b5 s4, so you could run your stock b5 s4 rotors with the b7 a4 calipers, which are direct bolt on as well

Not surprising haha how big are those rotors, 370mm right? Things are so massive but look incredible.

Thanks for the advice Big Head!

I just picked up a set of B7 S4 calipers on eBay for $300 shipped including S4 caliper clips!

I'm gonna order a full set of B7 S4 rotors from Adam's Rotors and the Apikol rear upgrade kit so I can run 345mm fronts and 300mm rears. :)

    No problem, glad to help

Did you get a pair of B7 S4 rear calipers as well? If so, there's a little fiddling to get them to work, nothing major just small things.

Very good! I was dreading running 2cm spacers to fit these RPF1's. Let me know if anyone has a line on a pair of b6/b7 s4 calipers.

great info, new to me S4 is running 17" RS4 reps and using required spacers(which I hate) to clear the B5 calipers...will be doing a brake swap...
    so for front brakes:
    B7 A4 calipers/brackets are a direct fit to B5 S4 still using B5 S4 discs?
    B6/B7 S4 calipers/brackets are direct fit to the B5 S4 using B6/7 S4 discs?
    Thanks,
    Rob

They are a direct bolt on but use bigger rotors and different pads.

the a6 2.7t that uses the ate caliper is pretty much exactly the same as the b7a4 front brakes so you use your 321mm rotor and ate calipers and pads. I picked up a set for $30 at my local wrecker so I can ditch those stupid HP2s if I keep my b5s4.

sorry to revive this from the dead, but for those who switched to the B7 A4 front caliper setup from their B5 S4, was there any decrease in braking performance? also thinking of the switch to clear my wheels.

Hi, i have done it and no.
Performance is the same, just less stupid in design ;-)

    Same disc as b5 s4

    Easy to do.

If money is there, go b6/7 s4

Now that you mention it, I may very well go with B6/7 S4 setup. Question is, will the B6/7 dust shields fit on my B5?
