Having just been shopping for these, I can tell you a couple of things I've found that may or may not be useful:
1.) Year model -- common sense dictates that a 2013 be less than a 2014, but typically, I see first model years hold their value a little better than the '13 does over the '14 since it is the same look. This may be due to the fact that there are a considerably larger amount of '13s available than '14s
2.) Saturation -- I have posted in other threads that the sheer amount of used RS5s available actually scared me -- it was making me think something was wrong with the car. Within 500 miles of DFW there were 30 RS5s available while only 4 S6s, 10 S7s, and 11 RS7s. This is driving market price down considerably in my opinion.
3.) Differentiation -- I feel that many people do not see a long list of pros for the RS5 over the S5. While us owners disagree, just look at the number of threads out there about how S4s and S5s are faster than RS5s and suggest buying the non-R version. I can personally say that while they may be faster, there is a significant different to my brain, but maybe it is just my brain. Take the other models, like the 6 and 7, and you'll see that there is no R version for the 6 and the 7 breaks the mental price barrier of 6 digits. There is obvious reason to choose the S over the A, but that becomes the end of the discussion (for the most part).
I paid significantly more than 51k, 56k, or 57.5k, but I feel I got a gem that is somewhat unique (audi exclusive color that is my favorite) with low mileage and not modded out (I did not want something that someone else might have messed up). Your mileage may vary, but this so-called limited production car seems to be more available than other cars not tagged with that moniker.
