    A4 3.0 won't start

I have a 2003 A4 3.0 with 169k miles on it. It is currently sitting in my garage unwilling to start and treat me to the driving pleasure you know these cars offer. Early in our relationship, maybe 20k miles ago, I had the common issue of difficulty starting after fueling. Browsing helpful forums such as this, I fixed the problem by replacing the n80 purge valve and charcoal canister. I haven't had the same problem since when it comes to fueling. However in the past couple months I've been suffering similar difficulty starting as I did after fueling before. The difference now being, it occurred randomly and unrelated to fuel stops. It would take a couple tries to get it started, after the initial normal first attempt, I would hold the throttle down about 3/4 and she would fire and clears its throat with some high rpms. Then it would run normally. Well about a week ago I tried starting it and it did the same crank, fire to ~1500rpm and die. So I tried pumping throttle on second, third etc attempts. After a few attempts it wouldn't even start but just crank. And thats where I sit currently. So I bit the bullet and ordered the RossTech Vagcom cable. Here is my auto scan result(I deleted modules w/o faults):

Upon seeing that cylinder three misfire, I replaced that coil pack simply because I changed the spark plugs a few months ago and a coil pack was only $20. Unfortunately that didn't work. I've also reprogrammed both my keys after replacing their batteries. I reprogrammed them using my VagCom and they are working to lock and unlock the door. The batteries were failing and I had to reprogram them previously due to weak signal so this should account for the immobilizer faults. Also there is no immobilizer light flashing while cranking. My 02 sensor faults have been there since I bought the car.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

The immobilizer is not affected by the batteries in the remote, and that could definitely be what is causing the issues of not starting. Have you tried clearing the codes, starting the car, then seeing what comes back?

The immobilizer signal pickup coil in the ignition switch surround, is faulty, and causing the engine to not start up because the immo control unit in the instrument cluster, is not receiving the start authorization code from the RFID chip in the key fob with the key inserted into the ignition switch. This is a common problem. The receiver coil in the ignition switch must be replaced.
After replacing the immo receiver coil, clear all the fault codes in all the controllers and drive the car, to see if any codes reoccur.

The engine may be flooded as well. Crank the starter and pull a couple of spark plugs and check the plugs firing tips for fuel soaking. or dry. If the engine is fuel flooded, disconnect all of the injector harness connectors and crank the engine with the gas pedal floored to clear out the flooded fuel. The engine might start then die out as the fuel flood is burned off/expelled from the cylinders.

Thank you for the advice. If the immobilizer reader coil is in fact failing, wouldn't the immobilizer light on the dash be flashing as I attempt to start it? Also, I found this part online. Do you think this will solve it?It appears to include the immobilizer reader coil.

Also, if I do replace this ignition lock cylinder, will my current keys work on the new part? Or must I find the black plastic coil part(having a hell of a time doing so BTW haha)?

The immo coil is separate from the ignition switch lock cylinder. You replace only the pickup reader coil, not the lock cylinder.

Ok, I have been searching like crazy for the past week and I cannot find a new reader coil. Does anyone have any ideas on where to find one? Places I've looked so far include: Audi Parts USA, RockAuto, autohausaz, genuine audi parts, wolf auto parts, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Ok, my car has started. This is what I have done to get here. Last August I replaced the spark plugs and found that the spark plug tubes were full of oil. So I replaced the VC gasket at the same time. However I neglected to clean the oil out completely. So when I pulled the plugs here recently when it wouldn't start, I found they were already fouled completely black and there was still some residual oil in the tubes. So I replaced all six coil packs, plugs and thoroughly cleaned out the tubes. Then I tried following the advice I got here regarding the immobilizer coil but for the life of me I cannot find a replacement coil anywhere without having to buy a new lock cylinder too. As I searched I ran into this thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ch-Replacement and in this thread the OP and others mentioned this being a common failed part in our cars and their symptoms matched mine. I also noticed while cranking and failing to start my car did not show me the immobilizer light so I thought that perhaps my switch needed replacing instead. Today I replaced my switch, then tried to fire it up but failed and smelt a strong gas odor telling me it was flooded as diagnosticator mentioned it might be. I couldnt figure out how to unplug the injector harnesses and decided to just pull my fuel pump fuse and cranked the engine for 20 seconds. Then I replaced the fuse and she fired up immediately. I took her for a 30 mile test drive with no issues. Parked it and started it one more time for good measure so at the time of this writing she was back in action. I plan to replace the fuel filter here shortly as I have no idea when it was last changed. Thank you for your help.
