I have 2002 b6 1.8t 5speed with 60k on the clock. It's all stock. I might not be able to put the problem in words correctly, but I will try my best.

I had the final drive seal replaced 8months ago. The one between driveshaft and transmission.

This week it is acting up. It has some kind of rattling noise coming from the transmission area when I was coasting. It's perfectly fine while speeding up in any gear, 1 to 5. Whenever I let go of the gas pedal, the noise comes. And it gets louder if I stay coasting longer time.

When the noise comes, neither pressing/ releasing the clutch or changing gears, even in neutral doesn't help getting rid of the freaking rattling noise.

The noise doesn't come every single time I drive, but it came much more frequently these couple of days.

Is it the transmission dying? Is it something with the seal replacement? I hope it's just something gets loose in that area. Any idea? Thanks in advance!

The first thing I would recommend would be to examine the exhaust line and heat shields. When you drive or accelerate the drive-line gets torqued in a counterclockwise direction. when you let off the gas it rotates slightly clockwise. This brings the exhaust line closer to the undercarriage and may be causing a rattle somewhere.

Another item to check is the vibration damping weight bolted to the back end of the transmission case, near the output shaft seal. It's necessary to remove the weight to replace the seal, so maybe the weight is loose.
