Noob here with my long ass story and question

    Hi Folks,

my story real quick, So in 2006 I found myself at the local VW/Audi/BMW/Porsche dealer trading in my 2005.5 Jetta for a basically new GTI (3500miles) that was just traded in for a RS4. I remember sitting at the desk and there sitting on the showroom floor was Dolphin Gray 2005.5 S4 with 2200miles and I just kept drooling, even though I loved the GTI I was going to take possession in which I failed to mention the previous owner just dropped about 5K in APR upgrades, exhaust,intake,software,springs,wheels/tires I just couldn't keep my eyes off it. Anyways about a month ago I was trolling CL and saw a Dolphin Gray 2005.5 S4, long story short I ended up buying it with 99,680 miles on the clock, yes I am aware of the Timing tenstioner issues so I knew exactly what I was getting into, I paid $10,500, he was asking $11,900, it has brand new winter tires just installed on OEM wheels and he also gave me a summer set of 19x8 Ultraleggra's with brand new Z rated tires, Good deal, bad deal or what. This is a one owner car, kept in very good condition, single doctor owner, the exterior I would give it a 9/10 the interior 9/10 everything works. My wife thought it was a new car the paint/body looked so good, however I noticed a few small dents (very small) and scratches which hey, it's almost 10 years old! He purchased this car about the same time I saw it, the pink slip shows 2200 miles when he bought it and I'm thinking if this was the same car. He gave me a huge stack of services done, replacement of HID bulbs, a few alignments,misc/switches replaced, etc. so whenever the thing had a hiccup he just took care of it NP. So far I love it, the ride is a little rough but I'm getting used to it.

My question, every other day or so in the morning when starting cold it sounds like the exhaust system is loose or something, for a split second it makes a burbly sound/rattling sound then goes away, and that's it. I'll drive the car all day long and will start up like a champ no issues. The next few days no problem, then again a it does it again, anything suggestions. Thanks I'll post pics too.

Without actually hearing it, it sounds like you are describing timing chain rattle. If it doesn't last for more than 1/2 to 1 second, you are probably OK for a while.

    Twas Fate! Congrats!

I remember when these came out and drooling too thinking I'd never be able to afford one. In 2012-2013 work fed me enough OT that I started a nationwide search. Never thought I'd land a Sprint Blue pearl model tho and less than 50 miles away. Now that I have one I still dont know if I can afford it but love finds a way lol!

If it is cold start rattle, replace the oil check valves. Do a search for the epic thread on it. Will hold oil high in the motor longer, meaning less slap on start from slackened tensioners, meaning longer lasting timing components.

I agree with crc, i have a leaky valley gasket so i am replacing the gasket along with oil check valves because im going to be staring at them. I just had my timing done and every now/than i hear the 1/2 - 1 sec rattle on COLD startups but its so random. Audi says its okay so i wouldnt worry.

2nd, this service saved my brand new rattly timing components. Like the RS6 wheels!

Just keep in mind, the tensioners/adjusters are likely fail at some point (5K down the road or 100K down the road). You might want to get ahead of this & consider the timing service so you can sleep at night. Nice ride, keep it that way.

similar to my story with my car. In 2008 or 2009 I drove from ct to new Hampshire to go look at my car. At that time it was traded in by a doctor with 49k miles on it and was a 1 owner vehicle only flaw it had was a broken glove box hinge. Didn't have the down payment for it at the time and someone else bought it before I could.. Then 2012 came and I was ready to pull the trigger on an identical car with less miles and less money but the dealer sold the car the day I was ready to send my down payment and ended up with the car I have now. When I purchased the car I have now, i picked it up with 67k miles. the seller told me how he drove to new Hampshire to pick the car up because he initially wanted a green s4 but the dealer sold the one he was after, told me when he got the car it had low miles and was owned by a doctor with the broken hinge. Right then and there I knew my car was the same one I looked at years ago. Almost like the car found me

I feel the same way, I live in Bend, 80K people here, 4 out of 10 cars here are suby's, I'm almost certain it was the same car. The sticker he gave me shows $54K with options, I think I'll just wait 10 years for now on to buy my german cars, lol.

Like I was saying I'm a noob to S4's, I didn't know these were RS6 wheels, I just assumed these were the stock wheels that came with the car. The wheels have severe curbage, I wonder if they can be fixed or if it's even worth fixing, I like the style actually.
