Heavy Duty Springs for S4 Avant Tow Car

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi -

I'm going to be adding a proper tow bar to my B6 S4 Avant (6MT) to tow dolly my new track car (Spec Miata) to / from the track and auto-x events (max 300km one-way). I expect the tongue weight to be about 150 lbs. and the entire load to be about 2500 lbs. Are there any heavy duty spring options for the B6 S4 Avant to counter the tongue / cargo weight and limit the rear-end sag that I might see?

    Cheers,
    Bryan

There is an OEM tow setup for the B6 Avant. it was an install feature in Audi Driver british publication.
You will be towing on a 4 wheel tow platform correct ? You should not have the load resting on the tow hook. It will negatively affect handling let alone in case of rapid direction changes.
There really should not be much weight on the tow. It will spin you around.
I have towed backhoes and dozers with a truck , same principle as the load being towed must be balanced on it's own platform. Especially for any trip such as yours.
I wouldn't tow anything unless it's on its own weight balanced 4 wheel platform.

Your best bet is probably to have a company like Eibach make you a set of rear springs with a custom heavier spring rate

    ^Agreed.

Friend of mine had custom rear springs made up for his Saab wagon for the very same reason. Found a local place (he's located in Denver) that make their own springs and made him up a set. IIRC it wasn't too expensive either.

Could also just get an Allroad. They are quite reasonable price wise

BC Racing Coilovers also make any kind of custom springs you want when you buy their coils so you may could reach out to them as well

and I think the S4 avant would be a decent tow car for small duty stuff. I've re-posted a couple times a picture of a guy on here who would use his B6 S4 Avant to tow his sailboat (...he also put it on the roofrack iirc)

Hyerco could be cheap if they're specs regularly made. They could do custom too but gets pricey. Swift springs is another option.

I thought the v8 S4 wasn't rated at all for towing, something to do with the oil cooler or lack thereof IIRC? I'd love to tow my "track" car with mine

In this country, it's not rated to tow much of anything. It physically CAN tow; it has a pretty stout gearbox, plenty of power and torque even off-idle, big brakes, cooling, etc. However, if you ever get into an accident, even beyond the safety aspect of towing a relatively large payload with a relatively small, narrow, low weight tow vehicle, you will likely get skewered by insurance, possibly regardless of whether or not it was your fault. Doing something like this that is wholly against all manufacturer recommendations will put you in the hot seat if and when anything at all goes wrong. Don't forget that the judge can assign damages well in excess of the cost of the other guy's car in an accident case.
