I have the D1, D2, S1, S2 etc. I was also able to get oil temp & lap timer. To enable foot-well lights on it tells me something about menu not enabled. I have not used it in a while but I get the Beta updates on my phone. Will try it again I also tried to enable flashing brake lights but don't know if that works either.

Carista app for iOS beta testing [wrench]

I got the oil temp and lap timer to work no problem. Still can't get the D1,D2 to work. Tried today here is the error. I've tired with the ignition on, with the car on same error.

The gear display is the known issue. They can't figure it out but it's a timing issue in the communication.
When this problem appeared is when strong support for Audi died off and they refocused on other manufacturers.
There has been little to no changes or updates in months and they stopped monitoring this thread.

Just got an email that Carista version 3.0 has been released. Looks like there's a new pricing model. I'm a little curious as to what this means for people like me that already paid $20 for the Pro version. I would hope that we would be grandfathered in and not have to pay $40 a year to keep the features we've already paid for.

    Carista 3.0 is live

    Dear Subscriber,

We have just released the long-awaited new version of the Carista OBD2 app! It includes 2 new major features and many improvements to the existing app:

    Service Due indicator reset
    Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) service
    New customization settings
A complete visual redesign of the app to make it even easier to use
    Support for German language
We have a brand new website!

We’ve also updated our pricing model - you now have the option to get an inexpensive 1-week pass ($9.99) or an yearly subscription ($39.99), either of which gives you Pro access to all features.

Finally, if you like Carista, please give us a 5-star review on the Apple App Store or Google Play after you update to v3.0 (or if you don't think we deserve it, please write back and let us know).

Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the new functionality!

    Regards,

    Carista

I just got the same email, there had better be considerations for people like us; at $40/year I'd never have bought it or their hardware, it's simply not worth it

What a joke... Buy VAGCOM, you can do WAY MORE stuff with it than this joke app.

If you continue to read the email from Carista (and you were a beta tester) the $19.99 lifetime still applies to you.

Not necessary if all you want to change are a few basic things.

Should all Honda Civic owners go buy a Ferrari 458 because they can go way faster in it? I hardly think so. They were designed to do different things. And the Carista app is not designed to be a VAG-COM replacement.

My email from Carista mentioned a temporary backdoor option. You didn't paste that part here. Did you see it?

That's a bad analogy, but thanks. I think if you plan on tinkering with your own ride, you should have the necessary tools to do it. Cheaping out on that will just get you bad results in the long run when you actually need to use the right tool for the job. Kinda like the people who changed out their supercharger pulley and didn't buy a pulley tool or rent one. They used a cheap one not made for pulling off such a pressed on pulley and now they have a mangled stock one and whatnot. Sure, you an argue they won't ever use it again, but that doesn't mean they used the right tool to do the right job. I guess if this is your first car you've modded and you haven't been doing it for a while, you can't comprehend the meaning of what I just said about having the right set of tools, but eventually you will come to appreciate it as you form this same opinion yourself after being bitten a few times for not having the right stuff on hand when you need it.

Yep, just got the follow-up. That is good!

    Quick clarification

If you already own the old Pro Package, you will have access to the new features for free!

Thank you for being our early adopter!

    Hi guys, I'm back!
(I'm the founder of Carista, for those who haven't read earlier pages in this thread)

Version 3.0 is now officially released! Service reset and EPB are included in it. Here's the situation with payments:

    - If you already own the Pro Package, you get the new stuff for free. You don't have to pay anything extra. This was different in older betas, but we ultimately decided to award our early adopters by giving them free access to the new functionality.
    - If you don't own the Pro Package, you can still get it at the old price through the "backdoor" that we're leaving open for a few days. Open the debug menu, then pick "Purchase old Pro Package".
    - If you don't own the Pro Package and you don't make use of the "backdoor", the regular pricing is now $9.99 for a 1-week pass to ALL functionality in the app, or a $39.99/year subscription, again for ALL functionality.

I'm available for any questions here (please don't send PMs as I don't have the capacity to answer them now). For specific issues with your account, just email [email protected]. Thanks.

If you previously had "test purchases" enabled on Android or a free iOS beta, those are now disabled and any purchases you make from now on will require real money. Again, if you hadn't had a chance to get the Pro Package until now (due to beta-testing / test purchases), feel free to use the "backdoor" in the debug menu to buy it now at the old price and conditions.

And then you followed up with an analogy that's just as bad. There's really only ONE way to pull the supercharger pulley and "not having the right tool" may mean your car is stranded until you can get the right tool.

This analogy does not apply to the differences between Carista and VAG-COM. Carista can do a subset of what VAG-COM can do. For the settings it can change, it changes them in exactly the same way as VAG-COM. VAG-COM doesn't change those same settings "better." They're either set or they aren't.

For many of us, the subset of settings Carista can do are fine. We don't need the advanced options made available by VAG-COM.

the thing about Carista as well is the user interface .. any idiot can download it and use it to make changes.. I'm a software developer and i don't feel like tinkering with the way VAG-COM changes values.. you press the wrong key you can potential put your car in limp mode, that's not user friendly .. Carista allows the most least tech savy person to make easy changes .. you don't like the wink feature.. you click disable wink and click update..

This thought process is what made the iPhone so successful .. simple steps.. simple buttons

    Awesome!

For me the best part of the app is the "readiness" check for smog, you dont know how much this has saved me from going to smog and having them fail me cause a monitor was not set. The best part it works on all models not just Audis. Great app, thanks for the continued support.

Why did you guys go to a subscription based model? Money? If that's the case, why not charge more for the app initially and let the market dictate if it's worth buying or not. Or simply implement ads and keep pricing the same as always. I dunno, I get that you have to make some money, but does the advancement and development of the app (or rather the level of development that's being done on it to improve it) really cost as much as you're asking people to pay on the new model plan? Something tells me not enough people bought the app and you've having to offset that some way. Again, just asking, that's all.

So just to clarify...I've been a tester since just about the beginning. And bought in for the $19.99. At least I thought i did pay that??? Honestly can't remember. . Anyway, I don't need to spend another $20? Or do I??

i'm assuming and purely assuming that most people use the App and never use it again, i know i haven't touched my car since i first made the modifications ... for those people the 1 week pass is brilliant .. for the people who are doing brake jobs frequently it will affect them on a yearly subscription .. i think they are offsetting the people who maybe doing it for other people and maybe even charging to do it

This is an industry-wide shift as most software providers are turning to a subscription model as opposed to a single purchase with lifetime use. It makes a lot more sense for software that's constantly evolving (such as mobile apps) and with which you keep getting updates and new functionality. Remember the old days of buying Windows or Photoshop? You had to pay again to get every new version. Nowadays if you want to use Photoshop, you get a monthly or yearly subscription and you're always using the latest version. Same thing with Carista. You continue to benefit from new developments, so it makes sense to continue to pay for their development. Plus, a large upfront cost would not really be justifiable you use the software only occasionally; with a subscription, you can pay when you use it and not pay when you don't use it.

If you paid for it before, then you don't have to pay for it now. You can check your old emails and look for a receipt from Google Play for the "Pro Package" from Carista / Prizmos LLC. If you haven't paid for it, then obviously, you'd have to pay in order to use it (and you have the option to use our temporary backdoor for the old Pro Package).

Yeah, something like that. See my other response above.

    .
Except that if you do the math, you actually end up paying more on the subscription based models than the old school one. There's a lot of people out there that could spend a few hundred bucks on a software package and get several years out of it before needing to upgrade to a newer version if necessary. Software companies were required to do security and compatibility updates to the software. Then those same companies started forcing upgrades on people by first dropping compatibility updates. Then when that didn't work enough, they stopped supporting the app entirely for any updates (security included). Then when that didn't work, they shifted their entire model into a subscription based product and the customer had no choice except to go to another solution... until that one followed the same suit. It's kinda like taxes. At one point we didn't have them and someone needed some free money for something, so they came up with taxes. Then some didn't want to pay them, so they made laws to make it illegal not to. Kinda like insurance and healthcare. Remember when you could drive around without insurance and it was all up to you to cover stuff if you got into trouble? What happened? Yep, made laws to require car insurance or else... cuz the insurance companies forced the government's hand. Now we have to have healthcare or we pay a tax penalty. Trust me when I say this, in a few years, it'll be illegal NOT to have health insurance and they'll throw you in jail for it. I'm just saying... proliferate the problem much? Hope it works out for you.

I'm happy I read this thread today. Downloaded the app a couple weeks ago and order the Carista OBD2 last week. I guess I didn't realize when I made those purchases I had to get any sort of subscription. Not a big deal, but glad I red this today so I could buy the $20 old school Pro version. :)

I'm really looking forward to using this app and tool to make some small chances to my car without having to worry about paying a dealer or dealing with a VAGCOM

I always use a little chewing gum on these rides. It filters out the pollutants. Of course you've got some good grillwork there to keep out the ozone. I gotta get this thing up to 95, uh, check out the fluorocarbon output.

(Really, I shouldn't have even started justifying our business model here. It is what it is. Let the market decide. As a "thank you" to our loyal users, we're temporarily offering a backdoor for the old-school purchase, so feel free to use that if you don't think the subscription model suits your needs)

This is very cool of you guys to do. I just took advantage of it. So now I have a lifetime license with use of special features too (rear brake, service indicator reset)? I'm happy.

    Thanks!

Awesome! I was irritated at myself yesterday for missing a Prime Day deal on the Carista ODBC adapter, but this news prompted me to buy it anyway. Hopefully the "backdoor" will still be available in 2 days time when the adapter arrives, since I don't see a way to purchase it without connecting to the adapter.

You should be able to purchase it without the adapter. I just opened the app on my phone, while not connected to my adapter, and it shows up under Debug Menu as "Purchase old Pro Package". It even gives me the option to put my iTunes password in to purchase it.

Hmm... I'm on Android, and I can't seem to find a Debug Menu!

So I need to clarify whether the Beta functionality will be available to me if I use the backdoor "Purchase old Pro Package" option.

Great to hear :) Yup, you're hooked up with lifetime unlimited access to all the special features.

You can use the "backdoor" even when not connected to the adapter or car: on Android, open the slide-out menu and tap on the "Version 3.0" label 5 times. This will open the debug menu, from which you can pick "Purchase old Pro Package". On iOS, the debug menu is one of the items in the main menu and you don't have to do the 5 taps trick.

What "beta functionality" are you referring to? As of yesterday's launch, there's no active beta anymore. The new service tools have been released officially. We will have other betas in the future, but that has no bearing on your access to any specific features with the Pro Package. In other words, if you get the old Pro Package, you'll have unlimited access to everything, regardless of what version of the app you're running.

Todor, are you still working on getting the gears to show on the dash in "D" and "S" on DSG models, or has Carista abandoned that feature?
Also, and chance you guys can have a "launch control" count show up on the ECU scan?

This. Saw the update for the app yesterday so was happy for that. Haven't had a chance to plug it back into the Audi but the last things I was waiting on was the gear display and the launch count. Would love to have them!
