b7 steering wheel thread

I couldn't find a thread that covered the different options out there for the b7. I'm currently researching what I need to do in order to fit an R8 wheel and it's been a chore trying to find any answers.
If any of you have changed your wheels could you post up pics and any experiences that would be helpful to others?

I just installed an RS4 (u.s. spec) wheel/airbag and it was completely plug & play, as expected. No errors, no issues. Well, besides losing my paddle shifters, but I don't mind as I never use them anyway. Love the three spoke design, thicker lower section and perforated leather.

B8 S4 steering wheel with paddle shifters. Originally was a 4 spoke! All that was needed was swapping the airbag harness from my old steering wheel as the main connector going into the clock spring was different.

There are a few out there on other forums. I just searched. As you know, airbags can be extremely dangerous. Always recommended that you have a professional do the swap for you.

For reference only, here is what I did: With car on, turned wheel to remove both plastic caps on the left/right rear of the wheel and completely loosened black bolts with Torx T30. The airbag was loose at this point, so I turned the wheel back to straight position carefully. Disconnected battery. According to what I've read, some people apparently skip that step by why the hell anyone would risk it is beyond me.

Held airbag out of the way and disconnected harness by pulling (very carefully) on tab at the top of the harness. Carefully disconnected all of the other small tabs/connectors. Removed airbag. Loosened and removed center fastener with Torx T55 (didn't have M12 Triple Square bit, which would be the right bit to use). Reinstalled in reverse order using some locktite on the center fastener. There was a mark on both the hub and the wheel (my new wheel as well) to perfectly center it. Was very careful not to over-tighten (strip) the two bolts that hold the airbag on.

Reconnected battery, then reset my clock, remotes, the auto-up function on my windows and of course my APR tune. All stuff you have to do when you disconnect the battery. No biggie.

Europrice has great stuff, but it's not helpful for guys like me who are sourcing things on our own. They make sure you have the right harnesses for your application. I wish I had the money lol

Here's my biggest issue with going with an r8 wheel. Supposedly it will bolt right up to a b7 (but not a b6) but of course the airbag will be different. The wheel I'm getting will be without a bag so I have to source that. I believe that the mfsw harness will be fine but from what I've read the airbag harness may need to be swapped. I have no hard answer on that though which sucks. For the most part, i've run into threads for b6's. The b7 threads I've seen tend to be able to reuse the existing airbag or are plug and play anyway because they purchased the wheel from Europrice.

I would love to see more info regarding some of these new B8.5 and newer TT wheel swaps (round airbags). I have been looking a little myself, but havent gotten very far with the wiring.

If this helps, I stumbled upon these guys in Poland who can make pretty much make anything you want, to your spec. They have a few prebuilt wheels to choose from but basically you can send them your wheel as a core and a few weeks they will make you a completely custom wheel in whatever color leather, stitch color/pattern, carbon fiber, wheel diameter thickness, flat bottom, grips, etc per your request.

Nah man they are Sportster CS's. I might actually get the cars dream guy to build me a new custom EURO rs4 wheel. His pricing was not to bad for a custom wheel.

I've seen the TT flat bottoms on eBay for around $250, just have to keep an eye out.

Used airbag should be cheap from a scrapyard or eBay.

I would be happy getting my stock 3 spoke just redone with fresh perferated leather and some alcantara and may a little thicker. I really like the B7 trapezoidal horn pad better than the newer round one

I have been thinking to retrofit heated steering wheel from A6 or A8 or Q7 for sometime now. Anybody done it yet?
The thing is they are very hard to come by and I am looking for a 3 spoke one. If something pops up for a good price, I might give it a try. But if anyone has already done it, please advise. :)

I also purchased a custom steering wheel from Poland, different company from one posted above. IMO custom is the way to go; not much more expensive than a used one, and possibly cheaper than some new ones.
Granted, my order may have been lost since I ordered back in Sept, shipped in October, and ISC NY has no idea where it is at this point; however, custom looks a whole lot better IMO than any stock wheel

I don't like when they look too lumpy personally, but some of these custom wheels are definitely sweet. I too prefer the more squared vs. round airbag design on the b7.

He hasn't messed around with the clockspring or anything. The B5 didn't even come with radio controls from the factory, and the B5 also uses a single stage airbag instead of dual so really nothing is hooked up.
