Has anyone gone from Unitronic to JHM tuning yet?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Im debating on making the switch but how much better can it really be? On my previous B7 I used to have APR stage2(HPFP upgrade) and thought it was good and now have basic Unitronic Stage 1 on my current car and it feels way better. So much JHM hype, or is it real?

I went from Unitronic Stage 1 to the JHM tune. I've been planning on doing a full review at some point but haven't yet. In short, the car feels like a different beast. It took a while for the tune to take effect, but once it did... wow. As has been mentioned before, the power delivery is so smooth and the power band is significantly wider. I have had Unitronic software for the better part of a decade on my k04'ed B5 1.8t ATW, (Still love that car :) ) and for about 4 years on my otherwise stock B7. I never had any issues with Unitronic and had planned on getting their upcoming k04 kit for my B7 as well. I had pretty much gotten tired of waiting on the Unitronic kit and kept hearing about this JHM tune and since it was on sale at H20, and significantly more affordable than the Uni kit I figured I'd roll the dice. I haven't been disappointed at all.
More to come when I do my full review. Hope this helps, feel free to ask any specific questions!

How is the boost control vs pedal input (you said the power is smooth...)?

Can you actually regulate the boost with the pedal easily or is it notchy like -20,-10,0,5,15,20 psi?

Does it just hit the boost you want on initial pedal input and hold it (like stock tune), or does it overshoot to 15-20 then go back down?

How is your fuel economy in comparison (any difference)?

Are the cold starts any different?

Any change in exhaust note (is it the same or quieter)?

How is the boost control vs pedal input (you said the power is smooth...)?

I think someone mentioned it before, its pretty much a 1:1 type input. There seems to be a very direct correlation between pedal input and power delivery

Can you actually regulate the boost with the pedal easily or is it notchy like -20,-10,0,5,15,20 psi?

I'll do my best to answer what I think you're asking. Boost delivery is very linear and gradual. Of course it bleeds of once you get up to speed. No notchiness at all.

Does it just hit the boost you want on initial pedal input and hold it (like stock tune), or does it overshoot to 15-20 then go back down?

Boost will steadily build (just over 18 or so is the most I can recall seeing) and the bleed off. Unfortunately I got my boost gauge after I got my tune so no comparison to stock

How is your fuel economy in comparison (any difference)?

Initially it dropped because I was constantly driving so hard. But it seems to be back to my Unitronic stage 1 numbers

Are the cold starts any different?

    No difference whatsoever.

Any change in exhaust note (is it the same or quieter)?

    No change noted...yet

Thanks I appreciate it! We had a customer today go from Uni Stage 2 HPFP tune to our JHM Stage 1 and he did the before and after dyno. It was flashed on the dyno and the initial start/first run made more power on the dyno than the Uni tune, and it hadn't even adapted yet!

I don't advertise dyno numbers unfortunately. If the owner of the car sees this, he is more than able to post himself though!

I was going to go the JHM route exhaust/ tune from them since I got my car but now I found out about this unitronic I might get this for the mean time until I save enough for JHM exhaust and DP's. Also my S4 is 100% stock thats another reason why I want to go unitronic because if I get the Jhm tune being stock It have any effects on my car. I've read reviews that the unitronic does make a difference but im wondering should I even bother with it? I'm going to be honest, I don't really notice power increases on the butt dyno unless its a huge increase like I will get with JHM exhaust/ tune/DPs etc
I also haven't really read any issues that arose from the unitronic chip/flash except one where it flooded his cats or something.

    I can't read this... but I assume you're making a huge mistake.
Buy JHM... I have APR, wish I did. Jake will do anything if for you to buy his products. Great man.. even takes my pathetic jokes =D

JHM stage 1 will adapt to your current hardware and reflashes to higher tunes are free.

I might purchase JHMs tune this summer... less than 6 months with my APR tune.. if that tells you anything.

Do you have a 2.0? This is the a4 section. If you do have a 2.0 then a tune is a must. After the flash your butt dyno will slap you in the face and demand an answer to why have you not done this before. The s4 down pipe and exhaust is made through them for the 2.0 using the s4 mufflers. If you already have a s4 then Jhm has some nice s/c kits that will blow you away.
What ever makes sense go with the opposite and you got it

I'm going to be honest, I don't really notice power increases on the butt dyno unless its a huge increase like I will get with JHM exhaust/ tune/DPs etc
I also haven't really read any issues that arose from the unitronic chip/flash except one where it flooded his cats or something.
No no no!! If you're 2.0T, get the JHM stage 1 tune for now, and then add exhaust parts as you save up. Their Stage 1 tune does not require any special hardware.

The s4 down pipe and exhaust is made through them for the 2.0 using the s4 mufflers. If you already have a s4 then Jhm has some nice s/c kits that will blow you away.
Haha no sorry Im a 4.2. I used the search function and didn't realize it was the a4 section my bad guys. I'm here now I have a question. I was wondering Instead of buying my s4 B7 should I have bought a A4 2.0T? I only ask this because it takes a crazy amount of money to make a N/A engine fast compared to force induced ones. My thinking is that I should have gotten a A4 2.0T with low KM for about 10K less than my S4 now and used that towards (Turbo swap/exhaust/ downpipes etc) and that prob would make it faster than my S4 now no?

My thought was, since I debated the S4 vs A4 for a while, is that the money would be more or less the same. A4 + mods might cost about the same as an S4 and have similar performance. $10k difference seems a bit steep though. I chose the A4 because I felt it would be fun to mod and tune as well as avoiding what I thought was a glass cannon (the S4 motor). I would base it on what you want out of it and what your definition of 'fast' is.

Why? I had great drivablity in my B7 with my Unitronic tune (still do on my k04'd B5 1.8t) and would still be with them if I hadn't switched to JHM (best decision ever!). All I've heard is that Unitronic's tune was more aggressive the rest of the off the shelf tunes, especially APR's. If it wasn't for JHM, Unitronic would the the tuner I would recommend.

Still happy with the jhm tune? No problems so far?
I am highly interested going with them but would like to get a long term review on that tune

Still very happy with the JHM tune. Have had it for about seven months. I agree with everything said above - very smooth, wide power band, linear power delivery with gas pedal pressure, and much more peak power than the eurodyne tune I switched from. Max boost is 20 to 21 psi.

I know most people don't think this way, but with my driving....

My current B7 has 77k miles and will probably drive her to 200k+... with JHM making so much more power that other tunes, that typically comes at elevated wear rates and basically, parts just being pushed harder and closer to their design limits. I'm looking for a bump in power, but not at the expense of longevity and/or long term reliability.

What long term testing/data is there for a 2.0T with JHM Stage 1 tuning?

We are in the same situation and I totally agree with you! My car has similar mileage and
reliability is my main concern. I don't want to push my engine at is limits.

There is no increased wear with our software, as we aren't changing the RPM rev limit. The software is making safe reliable power. We retain all factory safety parameters as well as implement our own.

We R&D and Tested this software for 2 years before we let the public have it to insure everything is working smoothly and we were able to obtain the most amount of power, safely.

So far in our stage 3 R&D we took my car up to 7800 RPM and 28PSI on a STOCK engine and it is still running smooth.

make sure the mad genius doesn't have to rip apart the block to replace the piston rings you fried.
