    what does relay J271 Control?

    2000 a4 1.8t my car recently died on me and the reader tool stated that Relay J271 failed. i was just wondering what it does

    ECU power relay. Get it replaced.

    ive looked for a replacement and could not find it, i google'd the part number and didnt find much of anything other than a Location for it. any assistance for finding a replacement would be appreciated.

    Just thought about it. You have a couple fuses associated with the ECU. Check them all to see if any are blown. Relay is probably just fine and you have a blown fuse. If fuses check out (continuity test is the way to go about testing these vs visual inspection), then replace the relay.

    Actually, I take this back. The ECM relay may not be in the ECM box for some cars, it will be under the dash behind driver side leg bolster.

    Because now I remember for my 98 AEB there is only altitude sensor in the ECM box as shown below and the relay is located under the steering column.



    But for some cars, the relay will be located inside the ECM box as shown below

    im just trying to fix my car's problem because i dont want to spend $150 every time it breaks down..

    In this case, the relay is inside the ECM box. It's the black one. Specifically, this relay provides power to the coilpacks. I am sure it also provides power to some aspects of the ECM as well. On the 2001 (AWM), it also provides power to the VVT solenoid. You can check fuse 29 in the fuse panel under the steering wheel dash right by the driver's side door, otherwise, the relay is toast.

    If the relay is toast, don't forget to look into why it burnt out: exposed wire, power surge, etc.
