Haha it was kind of a snap decision. Motor was out before I even went and picked up the transmission. I couldn't wait till spring!

Thanks man, I love them too! Working in the cold has been a little tough, but I have some awesome friends who are willing to come over and help me out and help keep me motivated to finish up. I miss boost too.

Motor is just about ready to go in the car. I'm taking the day off from working on it today and it's going back in tomorrow. Hopefully it goes smooth and it will be running and driving by tomorrow night, or at least Sunday.

Motor and transmission are in the car. Fired up first crank. Got everything bolted up and done about 2pm today.

Went to put coolant in and as soon as the thermostat opened it started leaking. After thinking about it and looking at pictures I think I might have put the oring on the block side and not the housing side. Kinda bummed but if that's the worst thing that happens I can't really be too mad. Front end is off already, going to try to get the housing off without taking the belt all the way off.

Only things I have to do are...
Fix the leak
Put front end back together
Get front bumper on
Align the shifter better. I have the JHM short shifter and I can't get the damn thing aligned. I can find every gear, 6th is a little tough if you go right from neutral and I can't find reverse at all. I'll mess with it more tomorrow.

Either way... I have a shitty update haha.

This may be tough to follow...

A few weeks ago I got the motor back in and the car just about done. Until my oring at the thermostat started leaking. I made the simple mistake and put it on the wrong side. So... I took the covers off, slid the belt forward, got the housing slid down, swapped the oring to the right side, put it all back together. I had a weird slack in the timing belt. I asked a few people who know their shit, they said I was all good.

I was not all good. Timing was 10deg retarded, I was told I was all good and just reset the belt... it's not off enough to do any damage. I was not all good. Compression test showed perfect compression (180psi) on every cylinder except for 5. Great.

Ordered all the parts I needed for a head swap, picked up a set of heads off an allroad from a friend of mine. And this past weekend I got to work. Had the head off and the new one on in a day. Car is sitting in my driveway, just waiting on me to put the intake manifold back on and replace the drivers side timing cover that I broke.

All in all if I can share anything... Octo check everything. Trust yourself and trust your instincts. I don't blame the car for any of the simple (yet crazy and unlikely) series of mistakes I have made. Just have to keep pluggling along and soon she will be back ripping up highways.

I think I've had 1 person sit in the back so far. They didn't mind it, climbing back there is the tricky part. I kind of rather not have more then 1 person in the car anyway, too much weight makes the car too low haha.

2001's have the early gauge faces with ESP. 2001.5 is when the new badge started.

The car is a bit stiffer. I 3 wheel leaving certain aprons now where I didn't before. I think having the cross bars will help a lot too, I still haven't picked them up.

Sooooooooooo looks like the motor is coming back out wooo -_-

I have about 1000 miles on the car since the motor has gone back in. Car wasn't even 100% back together yet and it looks like I cracked my drivers side AWE exhaust manifold.

I was afraid of this when I was putting the motor back in. The AWE downpipes have the transmission brace. My new 3" ARD downpipes do not have this brace, and they also sit kind of low on the car.

Unfortunately I can't find a way to 100% verify the cracked manifold. It sounds like a large leak, it gets worse as the car/manifolds heat up. I see no smoke in the engine bay. Downpipe-turbo bolts are tight, new gasket used. Turbo to manifold bolts are tight. The only thing I can think of is cracked manifold. I was thinking about spraying a little seafoam in a vaccum line and hope some smoke comes out of the leak. Anyone have ideas?
