how many splines does my axle have?

i have a 2001.5 b5 a4 1.8t fwd auto trans its a awm motor, i need to replace my front driverside cv axle asap and i was asked if i needed a 33 spline or a 38. please help me figure out which of the 2 it is... thnx in advance

There are 2 sizes of outer joints. I've never counted the splines (SRSLY, who's got time for that?) but I would only assume 33 and 38 correspond to those 2 sizes.

2001+ 1.8T's will always use the larger size outer joint.

The axle you want should also apply to a 2000 A4 2.8 Tiptronic, FWD or Quattro.

For kicks I went to my garage and counted the ones for my 2001 1.8T with "manual" transmission and it has 38 splines.

counting splines

i have a full assembled front subframe laying on the ground outside from an '01 AWM, but i wount go out there and count the splines for ya!

look at it this way, if your axle bolt take a 17mm allen, then 38 splines. the '99 i drive now takes a 14mm allen, so i would assume thats a 33 spline.
