    How to launch S6 question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,

I am about ready to order (build) a 2015 S6. I drove it twice but did not get a chance to launch it from a stop. I know about the 200 launch limit on the launch control, but is it possible to get a better than dog start without using the launch control? Nothing crazy, but is it possible to spool a little by holding the brake and giving it some gas?

I am going to load it up btw.... Still deciding on night vision. Any thoughts? Also, black optics versus thesprot 20s with double spokes.

    Thanks!!!

You can spool a little, not like the launch control though.

If you leave traction control in you can brake boost.

Careful doing this, without a wet clutch it puts a little more stress on the drivetrain.

Thanks guys..... Not talking about crazy launch, just stuff like getting the jump on a lane merge when at a red light. Something for a slightly better jump than just hitting the gas pedal, which has a bit of lag. Even in S or manual mode.

On the RS5, it lets you do half-launch control where you rev up to whatever rpm you want, drop the brakes, and take off. Doesn't seem to work on the S6 as well though - it just bogs down. As far as night vision - I personally am not a fan, it makes the windshield glare a lot in the sun, and the big plastic blob above the instrument cluster isn't very appealing. Oh, and it's a common thing to rattle as well. The functionality is mostly useless unless you drive at night on country roads a lot.

As for windshield glare and rattles, you are referring to the HUD which is standard on 2015 S6 now.

The night vision itself is unfortunately an expensive item. It does work...when it's below 77F...but I feel it has limited functionality unless you have many joggers darting out in front of you on dark roadways. A8 supposedly has deer or large animal detection, I have not seen if that works on the S6 yet.

I believe the S6/S7 transmission, as well as the B8 S4 DSG, all use wet clutches; thus why they don't wear out.

I know some of the low-output VWs use (used) dry clutches in their DSG units, but I think that's because the torque output is so low that wear is not an issue.
In high performance cars with dry clutches, they tend to wear very fast. The E-Gear Gallardo is a great example. Those needed to be replaced as often as their manual counterparts, and it's not unusual to have a clutch last ~5,000 miles.

Yes, sorry. I was referring to the bundled night vision / HUD package for the 2013-2014. Forgot they're separate now.

Who are you merging in on? I had a Ferrari (not sure of type - best guess F430) try to get the jump on me the other day and fail. I'll give him the win on sound anyway.

Getting the jump on a lane merge... I do this all the time even with 50% throttle. But I've found it faster to roll into full throttle rather than just floor it. Stops the TCU from thinking too hard.

I definitely agree that rolling into full throttle seems to work much better... The car doesn't seem to do well with just mashing the accelerator.

Hence my question.... I did mash it on the test drive and noticed this. I was not aware of the 200 launch limit at the time so I did not try spooling a tad by holding the brake.

Fwiw, I used to drag an 87 Grand National that was pretty worked! It was a nice 11 second ride. Brake torquing was a way of life with that beast!

Turbo lag isn't much of an issue on the 4.0T. Throttle response is a bit delayed but greatly improved in S mode. The S6 hauls off the line regardless, certainly woudn't call it a dog. You will smoke most anything without even using launch control.

Using M with the paddle shifters works well. Or M on shifter rolling on 1st is pretty responsive.

I have no issues mashing the throttle at a red light in S from a dead stop, no lag for me. Still waiting for someone to even be close when I need to merge into one lane. Was behind an F Type R Coupe this morning and I kept with him with no issues and he mashed the throttle, trust me and I don't have a tune. Now sound of the exhaust - Jag wins hands down...
