    RS7 2015 vs. 2016

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I have a custom order being built right now for a 2015 Matte Grey Daytona RS7 - dealer says it will arrive here in LA in November. Needless to say but I'm very excited.

However, I was a bit disappointed to learn that the new facelift will not be available here in the US til next calendar year.

The question I have for everyone is: is it worth waiting another half year for the facelift and ordering a 2016 instead? What else besides the new headlight design, slightly modified grill and taillights and slightly faster MMI processor would I be waiting for? Does the 2016 have the flat bottom steering wheel in the US? (p.s. can someone explain to me why the US RS7 didn't come with this to begin with when other 'lesser' cars like the RS4 and SQ5 have had it from day one??)

I'm leaning towards just taking the 2015 unless someone can tell me that the 2016 will be significantly better/worth the wait. Any insight/advice would be much appreciated!

No need to wait. The flat steering is an additional option over here. Can you not order it if you need it? The facelift is not really worth the wait imo. If you really like the light you can swap the tail lights once theyre available. Another change is shift pedals, theyre slightly bigger.

Not worth waiting...trust me you are buying this car for the engine and transmission...get it ordered and get it here to enjoy it. Its nuts how good it is. No flat bottom...our federalization is the issue again. I really don't get it on this car when my RS5, R8 etc all have it. I wish Audi had just done it...the flat bottom is much more comfortable to drive with in my RS5 and 8. I think I am going to switch mine out soon.

I believe the facelifted model will be arriving here in summer of 2015. So it it worth waiting an additional 7-9 months? I'd say no.

I do plan on waiting. At the end of the day in my mind it would always be last years model. ( not to mention for potential resale value too)
Better looking lights, better MMI, yeah Ill wait.

That's why I would just buy it. I would not want to wait that long personally if I wanted the car. Honestly depreciation will be hell on the car anyway regardless of year. Smart responsible money move as much as one could with an RS car is pick up a slightly used version so 2014 for a chunk less with the CPO extra warranty. And still enjoy the depreciation bath with a sh%t eating grin from driving it. Every car is still last year's model. I could care less about the MMI as I'm not that gadget oriented to care so not a big deal at all to me...its miles better than my R8s system. Phone and nav, connectivity work fine for my needs. If it had any performance changes then yes I would wait which I actually did on my car. I skipped delivery of my first RS7 (which was in the first production run) since DRC/dynamic option came available so did re-order and waited an extra 3 months for that. That was worth it.

Checked with my dealer on the possibility of the flat bottom steering wheel and it is not coming to the U.S. Personally the 14-15 squarer headlights are more organically beautiful whereas the 16 are going to look like every other Audi on the road. Just my opinion. Every time I saw a 12 s5 in my 14 rs5 I was missing those headlights. Traded up to the rs7 and knew it had to be quick before they got to those headlights. I'm still in awe everyday snap, crackle, pop! Congrats!

Buying a $125k car comes with the conscious decision that one will lose around 60% or $75k in the first 4-5 years in a worse case scenario.

This happens whether you buy a 2015 or a 2016, you just don't get to drive the 2016 car for another 6-9 months and in return all you get is an extra 9 months before your 75k depreciation levels out.

If you have the money and can afford the depreciation I'd say go for it. What you can't get is more time.

Enjoy now and get another new monster in 4 years if you can. Life is short.

One thing that I have realized is that cars will always be evolving. You wait for that "someday" when everything is seemingly right and then they go and change it yet again. You simply have to buy in at some point, and then keep the car for however long works for you. For some people that is 6 months, for others, it is 10 years.

I have one rule of thumb, and that is to never buy a car in it's first year of production. Other than that, it matters little.

The optimistic counterpoint on depreciation is the 2003 RS6. MSRP of 84k and 12 years later it goes for 50k.

That guy is going to be hanging on to it for the foreseeable future, epically overpriced. Even the list I showed had a 65k option for 24 grand. That's the market value.

^^^^^ This. Yes, always evolving. I was on the fence on this issue as well, and then realized I wanted the RS7 now. And for me, I prefer the more curvaceous look of the current headlight/taillight appearance. So, the look of the current model is more what I want. Better MMI would be nice, but it's not the reason for this car and it is definitely not a reason to wait . . . at least, not for me. However, if you prefer the look of the FL, then maybe you should wait. The performance of the car will not be the difference. And as Ensoniq noted, you cannot buy more time with your car later on.

Exactly... still laughing. Having owned an RS6 for 5+ years it was a super bath. I traded it in for 18K and then sold my wheels for 2400, RNSE radio/nav for 1200 and then got sales tax savings on the new car of about 1800 to get the equivalent of 24K back in 2009/10 for mine that was the average retail sale then. No one is going to get 50K for an RS6 even with low miles as it is a disaster to maintain over time regardless of miles on the car if the buyers do research. The transmission will go at any time and mileage, control arms at 30K, needs timing belts on a very regular basis etc etc. It will actually sell in the 30s at best.

I'm in the exact same situation right now. I put a deposit on a 2015 a month ago and still have three months until delivery with an October production date. I was told if I waited until December to order I could order the new style with a delivery of April. Not sure if delivery would be the beginning or end of April but dates tend to slide so it could be July. I'd like to have the newer style because it's newer; not much of a reason really. I'm planning on keeping it for a while, or it could result in a divorce lol, so resale is not a big concern. I'm not crazy about the shape of the new headlights, they look too small, but I like the newer internals in the headlights and brake lights. I would prefer a faster MMI and larger paddle shifters but it's a balance between waiting and driving. Hell, I'm taking delivery in late November which means it's gonna be at least 4 months of snow. Not the best way to start out with an RS7. For me waiting 4 months sounded a lot better than waiting 9+ months.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I prefer the headlights & grill of the 13/14 7 models.

I can't say I really understand the discussion of depreciation on the RS7, or any high dollar car for that matter. If you are attempting to go CPO to save 5k...ah, I can sort of understand it, but the reality IMO is, you don't buy a 100k+ car to worry about depreciation. You obviously do well for yourself in life, 5-6k is going to break you? Now, in a situation like the 911 Turbo S I drove a few months back that was literally 1/2 off the MSRP with only 15k miles on it, I would go used for sure. I bought my S7 new, and have no regrets. I simply love driving that damn thing so much. I am sure the RS guys feel the exact same. If you absolutely love the cosmetics of the refresh, wait. If you love the way the car looks now, buy it, get it here and drive your ass off!
