I'd recommend picking up some leather dye like this stuff here HERE and using it to restore the worn leather. We got a three spoke leather GTI wheel for my dad's old MKIV Golf that I currently daily while I work on the B5 and it looked like your Sport wheel does now, but after that leather dye it looks like new, I did that probably 1.5 years ago and it's held up perfectly so far. Just get that stuff and cover all the leather on the rim of the wheel and you'll be set!
