Night vision (pedestrian detection) gotcha. Note for anyone taking delivery in summer

So I got my brand new 2015 S6 and I'm wondering why the pedestrian detection and alarm symbol are both crossed out on the display and I can't seem to get the yellow display detecting pedestrians. Well, I should have search the forums more thoroughly but since it was in for clear bra install anyway I asked them to take a look. Anyone who has searched this same issue already know that the ambient air temp needs to be below 77 F for the pedestrian detection to function. Even the dealer didn't know off hand and had to research it. Seems like a little obscure piece of info. It is in the written manual but not in the video manual in the MMI. Better than it being broken.

Yeah, it only works at night, or on cold days... Might not work on warm nights, but you can still visually see night vision if you are driving through pure darkness.

I'm also not sure if they have added support for wildlife, yet, but they said that was on the way (i.e. Deer).

Well I never knew this...glad I skipped it in my climate. Also assumed it would pick up animals, which I do need.

Do the headlights need to be on as well, I figured that was my problem when I tried to use it during the day (for testing and play). Always with the line out, but at night it would work. Assumed the lights had to be on. If that is not the case now I can drive with no lights and not hit things ;-)

Thanks for the info.. For some reason, i can't get mine to produce the audible alert when it detects a pedestrian. I see the yellow highlight but no sound. I have toggled the audible setting but it has never made a noise. Broken?

I think the audible alert only sounds if the car thinks there is a chance of hitting the pedestrian. I would not try and test that out, if I were you :)

I wonder if there's a vag-com code that enables night vision when the headlights are off.

Yes the headlights have to be on or auto.
I think the ambient light sensor has to see it is dark enough.
The night vision has to be switched on with the pedestrian detection turned on in the MMI.
And the air temperature has to be below 77ºF.

Now I see why this option has limited usefulness. If I didn't take something from stock I doubt I would have ordered it. We'll see next time I am on a pitch dark windy road below 77ºF....

I don't know, but it looks like you are from NJ, seems like it would be pretty useful 60% of the time during the day in our climates, and 80% of the time at night.

The real question is how useful is it in detecting the engines from police cars hiding on the sides of the roads.

I have used it for this very purpose. It does show a glowing object on the side of the road. more of a hit miss but it does spot anything hot.

Hey all - Contrary to what was mentioned in this thread, i was able to turn on my night vision during broad daylight, 84 degrees, and with headlights in any position.

Yes, the night vision system turns on but you see those two yellow icons in the upper right? Both pedestrian detection and audible warning are shut off. It will not indicate pedestrians with a yellow box or sound at that high a temperature...
I guess I should update my subject line to "pedestrian detection gotcha".

Curious..in this video it is around 80ºF and seems to be working fine. Is the 77ºF limit a US only thing?

It works the same everywhere. Really it has to do with the ambient temperature and that temperature is probably given as guidance. Generally cement will retain heat, so it will vary at times, as it won't be able to tell 98 degree cement from 98 degree people.

It is a hard limit for sure...at least in the US. 77F no pedestrian detection 76F it is enabled. Now that I am looking for it, it is more obvious. As for the 98 degree cement...I certainly hope they accounted for that otherwise it will be going bonkers with alerts for every hot exhaust pipe, tire, and engine it sees.

I'm waiting for animal detection to be added (the current S8 has it), where I live an impact with a Moose could ruin your day.

It worked for me on my RS7 when it was a little over 80 degrees at night when I was going through a road by my house covered in trees. That was the first time I saw it putting squares around people on the side of the road. Mine is US spec, but perhaps I changed something in VAG-COM?

It looks for a shape, so it shouldn't misfire when the cement is hot. (Source: I do computer graphics software for a living)

This was the #1 reason I did not get night vision. HUD was a must-have, night vision was a maybe so I did the research. Ped detection won't work in this climate for much of the year.

When pricing came out, well after the order was placed, I was even happier. I'd never have expected the night vision to be responsible for 80+ percent of the price of the 2014 Inno package.

I agree, limited usefulness. It really should show an indication in the HUD if it detects ANY pedestrian nearby. It is stupid that it will only beep if someone is actually in danger of being hit. I would foremost like to know that there are people walking nearby, and maybe a louder/different beep if someone is actually in danger. Between this and the MMI control wheel being backwards, sometimes I feel whoever makes the software at Audi is a moron.

It's an interesting idea...just not sure about the safety aspect if it takes away too much of your attention from looking down the road. You certainly shouldn't drive with your eyes on it regardless of where it is. However, as others have said, the big miss that hopefully they will fix with software is that it should give an audible alarm the moment it recognizes a human or animal.
For me, that would help keep my eyes on the road and not need to glance at the screen as much. That alone is a huge safety advantage...Audi, are you listening?
