    Nastybutler's Scuba Blue "Build" Thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I say "build" because I haven't, and don't plan to do, any performance mods, other than an APR Stage I tune and maybe a quad tip exhaust sometime down the road (if you count an exhaust as a performance upgrade, which I don't). I won't apologize for the cell phone pics because that's all I have. No skills or desire to buy and learn to use a DSLR. Anyway enough prattling, here's what I started with:

Looks pretty good (the car, not the garage, ha ha), but certainly room for improvement. Besides my xpel clear bra and 35% window tinting all the way around (and debadging the rear), my first mods were to put in the trunk cargo kit that Audi didn't have on my car already for some strange reason. So, grocery bag hooks, as well as the plastic washers and screws to mount them were obtained, as well as a side compartment net and main cargo net:

Shortly thereafter I ordered my S-line flat bottom partially perforated steering wheel (with upgraded paddle shifters) as well as S-tronic perforated shift knob, and not too long after that fitted my RS pedals:

Before (note that my non S-line A5 didn't come with paddle shifters, just had to do a line of coding in VCDS to get them working):

    After:

Then one of, if not the biggest change to my cars exterior look, the RS (eBay replica) grill (and put LED fog lights on when I had the bumper off as well):

    Before:

    After:

The other huge change in the looks (and handling department) was getting a set of OEM 19 inch Y-spoke alloys painted gloss black. Another eBay find. They are 19x8.5, ET32, replacing the 18x8 ET47 wheels that came with it (no, they technically aren't stock, but I had the dealer swap them with an A4's wheels that I liked better). The shoes are Hankook Ventus V12's 255/35ZR19.

    Before:

    After:

Somewhere in here I found time to swap out the dinky factory B&O 10" subwoofer for a Pioneer Champion Series subwoofer to fill out the weak bass this premium system craved. I followed the thread here starting with post #7 (Bobby Kinstle is the guy with the info I used): http://forums.audiworld.com/showthre...346&styleid=12

Now on to my most recent mods. I painted my calipers black the same time I put some 20mm spacers on the rear wheels, then I installed some E-code headlights and had my chrome window trim wrapped in satin black vinyl over this past weekend. All of which are subtle visual mods, but improve the looks immensely in my eyes.

Well that's it for now. Other than the 034 transmission mount insert I just got in today. :) Feel free to ask any questions you may have, I'm always happy to help since I've learned so much from these forums.

Future mods planned: APR Stage II - Done, Sway bars front & rear - Done, Alu kreuz, full quad tip exhaust, S-line seats (if I can find some for a good price locally)

Edit 7/15: Installed the tranny mount insert.
Edit 12/29/14: Installed EC Test Pipe and had Stage 2 upgrade done in November.

Nice, I like the scuba blue color, don't see many of those out there. I'm also a fan of the y-spokes, always wondered what they'd look like in black too. Loving the interior mods too. For the S-tronic shift knob, was that a difficult mod, because Ive wanted that but heard there is some plastic piece you have to gingerly bend or twist to go from the stock left-side button shifter to the S-tronic. Also, did the fronts get any spacers, 20mm looks good for the rear.

Thanks jjh2oman. The shift knob swap was a bit of a PITA, but if you're careful and use a heat gun, there's not too much risk. Just need to be patient and not overheat the shift rod or overtwist it, but that's the only way to do it other than replacing that entire part, which would be a real expensive job.

I haven't put any spacers on the front yet. I'm waiting for some gently used 10 or 15mm ones to come up in the classifieds, which is where I got the H&R 20 and 30mm ones. 30 was too wide for my Y-spoke rears, but I'll use them in the winter with my stock ET47's to make them suck less, ha ha.

I just bought spacers for my Y spokes, went 15mm front/20mm rear. Been too busy to get them installed at the moment. I think 20mm was perfect on the rears.

I'd like to, as well as an S or S-line bumper when I upgrade my exhaust, but getting them for a good price shipped to Alaska, and then having them painted, is more cost than they're worth at this point.

Can you tell me about the sound from just the sub upgrade? I assume no amp upgrade??

Was it worth the purchase? I think B&O is good for me. I listen to everything from rap, trap, r&B, soul, to edm.

But i always welcome a little more clean low end.

It's a straight sub swap using the stock amp, but it's a pretty significant difference. Especially on rap or other music with a lot of low end bass. Not as noticeable on rock songs, but there's not much bass there anyway. As the sub loosens up it should get even better. It's really how the system should have come from the factory. Best $90 sound mod you'll find ($60 for the sub and $30 for Dynomat on Amazon). I guess I should have mentioned that I covered the top of my rear deck with Dynomat, but that's covered in the link I posted.

Not willing to spend $3,000 or $4,000 just for MOAR LOW. It'll stay tall and (relatively) comfortable for the time being. Not to mention the room I'd lose in my already small trunk is another sacrifice to functionality I'm not willing to do. If they could get those kits down to where they fit completely in the tire well, I'd be more tempted.

Added some Rings decals to my front calipers. Not too flashy, but keeps them from being just black and boring.

Thanks. I'd love to have the black chrome exhaust tips, but they're a bit pricy considering they would be a short term item since I plan on going for quad exit exhaust in the future. Rings will stay chrome for now.

I used an Add-a-Fuse on the fuse panel by the steering wheel to power a socket with a 2A USB charger in it hidden in the panel underneath the steering wheel, then ran the Nexus Qi charger's cord to that. The cord comes out at the corner of that panel which is only a couple of inches from there I have the charger stuck to the dash right above the key slot.

This weekend I installed the Eurocode test pipe, and today I had my local tuner install APR's v2.0 Stage 2 tune. Even on 90 octane (the max here) I should be close to 300 HP at the crank. Feels like a different car when I punch it now. Woooooohoooo!

Good to hear you are enjoying the tune. Will be installing my hfc soon then get stage 2 apr.

Did you have to run an O2 spacer or did you get the file that codes it out?

That's cool. Unfortunately, emissions here requires readiness of the sensors. So I'll have to get the tune that does not disable readiness.

Eh, I don't want to mismatch / misrepresent. I can practically make my car an Sline, but I can't make it a S5 or RS5, so I don't want my seats to say that. Buuuuuuuut if the price was right on a set of them, I'd probably do it anyway.

Got them both through cars-equipment.com. I don't remember what the knob cost (it wasn't much) but the wheel was less than $500 including FedEx shipping.

Edit: I just looked up my order email, and the wheel was $421, the knob was $157 and shipping was $20 for both.

I really enjoyed reading this thread. I especially appreciated and relate to your approach to mods in general.

Have you updated your interior lights to LEDs?

Thanks, namvar. And no, I actually prefer the warmer stock lights to the cold white LEDs.
