    Cross country on a trailer

Moving to CA, not off to a great start...

Car (stock height) was too low to get on the auto transport without a little help from some 2x8, but it took bottoming out on the undercarriage for the guys directing me to realize it despite me asking numerous times and being assured it was fine.

Tore a bit of the insulating (thick felt) material and plastic, nothing mechanical or towards the midline. Should be covered by the insurance I bought but I'm wondering what it should cost.

    Any guesses?

My guess is it won't be worth the insurance claim. Provided it's just the panels under the car I'm almost positive you'll be able to buy replacements for less than your deductible. Removing/replacing them is a very easy process as long as you have a set of torx and a phillips screwdriver available.

Welcome to CA btw! My family is all from Johnstown and I lived there a couple times growing up!

uhaul trailers blow, but for the future, i would suggest not loading a car going up hill. it only increases the angle you are loading. its better to face downhill and it will reduce the angle you are driving up onto the trailer. I used to rent uhaul trailers for moving and buyiing a few camaro's when i was building them for HPDE's. I learned a few tricks along the way.

Thanks guys, actually moving back! Excited except for the long drive, too adventurous (cheap?) to do it any other way though!

That incline was much more level in person, we tried moving the truck to get it to dip the trailer down but didn't have any good areas to do it. Wood was the only way.

Here's a closer look, hopefully the damage is just a flesh wound. Good to know those are cheap parts.

In case it's worse than it seems, I have $5000 worth of coverage for the car through Uhaul (not my personal insurance). What lines are those running on the right side?

I think this may have happened unfortunately, there is some fluid leaking it looks like. Does the plastic fuel line run on the right side? Anything else it could be? Why the hell would the fuel line be that superficial??

if its fuel you should def. be able to smell it immediately.

I could only see it from the other side, it's hard to see or reach from the same side. Couldn't get a hand on it to dab and smell, couldn't smell it from the side... Anything else it could be?

Here's a better shot of the "leak"

I was able to get a finger on it, doesn't smell like gas and is actually pretty thick and greasy. Any ideas? It's on the plastic just behind the passenger wheel, right before the thick felt liner starts. Could have been there for a while for all I know.

Could be trans fluid, could be oil from when you had your oil change done poorly and some leaked out of the canister as they open it.

Thanks Milk, it's bilateral sadly, but that link will be good. Please tell me $100 shipping is a typo though!

Nice to have you back Swank ;)
Haven't even had my first oil change yet, womp womp. Would have to have done some serious damage to be trans fluid right?

I'm almost due for my 5k service, maybe I'd better just let them check everything and tell me the damage. Hopefully it's just the lining and I can do it myself. Car was running fine so hopefully it's an easy fix, but lv2000's "2 days later" story has me concerned.

Thanks all, time to give the wife a break from driving.

I think you misunderstood. I never said you did damage to cause the leak. I was implying that it could have been pooling up in there and collecting. You ripping it apart and scratching the belly pan (yes I see scratches) probably made it come out. I would take it to a dealer for a full inspection and tally of all parts broken. Then send that bill to UHaul for reimbursement through their insurance.

Word, thanks. With the car being so new I guess I assumed there shouldn't be any fluid leaking/accumulating, but probably that's an unsafe assumption.

Considering purchasers have picked up new cars with low oil level indicator in the MMI and other issues totally missed during PDI, I wouldn't be so sure.

Could be if it's everywhere. He'd have to check. From his description and the pictures it looked more like a small section rather than an all over the place thing. I remember the first EVOs that came here had goods of it all over the bottom of the chassis. Everyone was freaking out. Lol

I scraped on both sides, and the grease patch is on the passenger side. I can feel two lines running in the area but can't tell if they're damaged, but I don't think the grease is fuel. Would those be the fuel lines though? Or evap?

Intercity Lines does a nice job moving cars on a covered carriage and not damaging them, for about $1700 from east to west.

Yea but the drive though :D. I've done it twice from SF to Philly and back again in lesser rides. This is a shorter trip and a much more enjoyable car. Thread hijacking over

Part numbers for the panels according to them, for posterity:

    LINING 8K0 825 207 D
    LINING 8K0 825 208 H
    RIVET 8E0 825 267

Assuming they are correct, the letter at the end must designate different revisions.

Same exact thing happened to mine last week. I'm hoping to either fiberglass it or epoxy it. Getting my oil changed this weekend so I'll just tell my Indy guy to keep it off for me... then reinstall when fixed, however.

You realize that there really isn't such a "thing" as "necro posting", right? Good answers to good questions never get old...especially since there are thousands of these models still on the road...still having the same issues with belly pans.
And since I didn't see any ingenious suggestions for "fixing" it, other than "buy one from the dealer" (at hundreds of dollars), I thought I'd bring a little 21st Century, AI, cheap-ass Scotsman's repair-it option to the table! Cheers!
