Just wanted to give this useful thread a good old fashioned bump and add 2 spark plugs that have been recommended to me.

I would state that those are starting gap sizes but can certainly be smaller as LOE and others have shown in this thread. Log with VCDS and find where your car lowers timing pull. 3 cylinders for me are happy at .026, while 1 is happy at .025. 2 others i will try gapping to .024 (and im only Stage 2 GIAC).

At .026, the 3 three plugs which were .028 have 0 knock showing but between 2.25-5 degrees when at .028. So there is no one solution for all cars.

Strongly agree with individually gapping cylinders when necessary

Just did this on a 2009 A6 3.0T. Very very similar still. I had plenty of space though, without unclipping any of those other sensors. Also wasnt even close to needing one of those wobble sockets, maybe earlier years have a bit more space in there. A six inch extension wasnt quite enough for me though, so just added another and was fine.

Just wanted to help the post and say thanks, too.

I am using these plugs also and have them individual gapped based on logs, have a few at .024 and a few at .025, cleared up my missfire issues.

I need to replace the four t20 torx screws that hold the ignition coil wiring cover on.

Does anyone actually know the size of the screw or bolt?

What are the recommended plugs for the B8.5 S4? It is my understanding that these changed from B8 --> B8.5.

    Thanks in advance!

Changed plugs today with the 9EIX NGK due to flashing to IE Stage 2 today with a 187mm crank pulley. Cars got 80k on the clock, and these may have been original. Bought car at 57k. Plugs were a lot easier than changing the crank pulley with clip on, haha. A few things,

    1. I didnt have to remove the airbox. I just unattached both connecting tubes, and pushed out of the way to side. Didnt need to unclip any parts of the harness on pass. side
    2. Biggest PIA was getting coils out in an 80k car. Use zip tie method and you wont risk damaging coils if theyre really set in there from time/miles
    3. Push in male clip to coil first before pushing tab down with tip of screwdriver. It should slide out easy after that. If its not try pushing in harder before hitting tab
    4. 22lbft torque

Took me 45min, but I was being slow. I could fly through it in 25min a second time. Easy job to do, dont pay someone to do it if youre somewhat handy

    Hey all,

I just wanted to add some tips. I know those clips can be a PIA. I had some issues on my old b7 a4 before I discovered a good way of doing it, but it went pretty smooth on my s4. I use one of those socket screwdrivers with the square tip. I press down and towards the wheel well on the tab gently and then pull the connector up towards the coil pack...it usually clicks and then you push down and towards the wheel well on the tab and it will likely slide right off. It took my about 30 seconds per side doing this. I'm sure that is what Audi intends you to do just by the way it feels.

I also do not remove the air box, I don't think it's necessary as long as your extension isn't too long. It's a bit tight but just slide the extension with the socket in the hole and secure it to the spark plug then put the wrench onto the extension. This worked fine for me.

When you put the new plugs in, start it by hand with a spark plug socket..but use a long 5/8 plain socket to finish. This will stop the socket from getting stuck on the plug. Just make sure you keep it straight and don't rush.

Anyhow, I hope this adds value for someone.

This is no big deal, I recommend you watch the video for your model. I even repaired my spark plugs just by reading an article on selfgrowth.com about it. So, nothing complicated.

Just wanted to add a little tip I picked up along the way for the socket getting stuck on plugs, I just use electrical tape to hold the socket on the extension, never had a problem since. :wrench:

Think I read this in a Haynes manual. Use an appropriate length and diameter of heater hose, the size that will fit snugly on the tip of the spark plug. Then just put the new plug in and hand thread it so to speak. When it won't turn anymore just pull it off and finish with extension and socket. Works like a charm, been using it for years.

Maybe never. If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it. Unless you get misfires that are not resolved by replacing plugs, leave them alone.

+1 to that. My 2010 Stage 2 made it to 110K miles before I traded it without needing new coil packs. The B8/8.5 isn't like the S4s of old where you needed to carry spare coils in your trunk, haha.

This. They just don't really wear like plugs and things do and it will take a long time for the insulation in the coil to break down.
