Glad I could help. I monitor a lot of Audi forums but in my opinion the Audizine B6 forum is the best one available. I have picked up a tremendous amount of information over the years form AZ members and I am more than happy to pass it on.

    Cheers!

I went through the same diagnosis... had a rattling at 2500-3000 rpm. Thought it was the sepentine belt tensioner (no), alternator pulley clutch (no), and then took off the serpentine belt and ran it. Still rattled. Decided to do a TB and WP kit. The bearings in the WP (metal impeller) had migrated and were not uniformly spaced. I had 30k miles on the WP - disappointing. Went 75k on the factory one, and it didn't get noisy - it leaked.

Maybe the metal impeller WPs aren't all they're cracked up to be...

What do you do if you can't get the old CCT compressed to put slack on the chain? I can push down on it, so it's not stuck, but the tool isn't compressing the pads at all...

that means your engine isn't at TDC.

I’m going to assume your engine is at TDC otherwise you shouldn’t even be attempting to mess with the chain tensioner yet.

If so there really is no reason it wouldn’t compress unless the threaded rod on the tool is not making contact with the threads on the tensioner or the threads are stripped.

It seems it would have to be a TDC issue.. Buddy said it was at TDC when I was turning the crank, and marks lined up on the pulley, so that's when I pulled the VC and tried to put the tool on, after marking the cam/chain.. I'll check it myself tomorrow, called it a night, don't want to mess anything up...

    Thanks!
