    rear ended! but no damage?

So last night i was sitting at a red light when i noticed some headlights coming up on me at a high rate of speed! In my head im thinking; holey S@$T! So i shoved her into first but by the time my foot hit the gas it was already too late. He smacked into me and pushed me into the intersection. I immediately jumped out of my car to access the damage. And to my surprise only a little scrach was visible! I looked at my bumper and at all the seams, frame, trunk. I couldn't believe it, his monster of a car, a 1985 jaguar didn't total my car! I checked underneath and all over. The only thing that i noticed was the 5mph bumper showed that it had been compressed but poped out again. Anyways I just waned to post what had happened to me for anyone who is looking to buy an audi and is sceptical about safty. These a4's are realy strong and well built. I've owned domestic & Japanese cars in the past that were in a similar accident but totaled.

What was the status of your car upon impact? If your foot was not on the brake, and clutch was in, that is ideal for low damage as the car will just be pushed forward.

Yea my foot was on the clutch and the other was hovering right over the gas. Im sure this is the reason why most of the impact was absorbed. But as i recall, he never touched his brakes. Damn drunk drivers. :/

This is way I keep it in 1st at red lights. Also, if by chance you get knocked out from a rear impact you'll pop the clutch and the chance of the car roll into the intersection is lower, possibly preventing a secondary accident.

My friends tell me it's weird to do this. I tell them they're fuckin lazy.

Check the frame on the inside of the trunk for dents or deformation. I was hit similarly, only a scratch on the bumper and a small dent in the trunk lid, but the interior frame on the trunk had been damaged.

I'm glad the op is safe and sound and thst his car made out well...

But on a side note, isn't pushing the clutch in the entire duration of sitting at a light bad for the clutch? Essentially isn't it engaging and just rubbing against the flywheel?

Don't mean to sound dumb if I am sounding that way... Just clarifying

+1 My wife was rear ended and the damage to the rear trunk was only evident after removing the spare tire. Though in her case the person that hit her was laying on the brakes hard so their nose went under her car...in your case it sounds like they hit you square but still worth a look.

No. The TO bearing is pushed on the forks of the pressure plate, disengaging it. No engagement on the clutch disc, flywheel, or pressure plate. But as someone tried to mentioned earlier, you are putting more stress on the TO bearing than it needs. That of course is the purpose of a TO bearing, but it's like saying why place stress on it when you don't need to. On flat surface I usually just sit in neutral with no foot on the brake pedal either. But I am cautious of my vehicle when I do, as to not roll back or forward.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

Yeah it screws the pressure plate up... but i live in a town of degenerates... i also just happen to be a mechanic, so my question is, is it worth risking the frame damage? Or is the cost the a clutch kit not worth it?

That's what I meant to say, the throw out bearing. I do the same thing of leaving it in neutral. Foot on the brake at the most. A 1300 dollar clutch isn't something I feel like replacing again.
