    who's got some painting skillz?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Need my motorcycle helmet painted. Unfortunately the new bike's colorway won't go with my helmet haha... and they don't make my helmet anymore (and its the only one that has ever fit me properly). I would do it myself but I hate the splotchiness that goes with painting rounded objects myself (aka i suck ass at painting, esp with flat colors)

Just want it to be one color, flat black everywhere. Not sure how much it should cost, i'm hoping for somewhere around $100 haha but be real with me if that's ridiculous. more than that and i probably would just upgrade to a helmet in a higher class

i know there are guys in here that have paint booths and do their own work, if u could hook a brotha up that would be amazing. of course, beer will always be a part of your compensation.

like i know dip is smooth and it looks good especially from like 4-5 ft away but... this is going to be like a foot from my eyes a lot haha. its just gonna be really easy to see any imperfections so i think i'm gonna get it painted. looks like mikey might be down to help me out

I painted a few helmets before. It's not too bad. Mostly it's just patience. Throw down a light cost let it dry, do another light coat. The only thing is that if you do Matt black and don't finish it off with a clear or something else it will rub off.

i mean how do you get it even though? to the point where it doesn't look blotchy? is that just where the patience and light coats come in? sounds like something i should pay something else to do - i suck at patience haha.

yep just many coats. blotchiness usually happens from a few things, being in cold weather conditions, not shaking the can enough between sprays, but usually its just from changing your spray point. If you move the can close to the helmet and then further you get uneven paint distribution so you want to keep the can at the same distance at all levels. Also pick up some newspaper and masking tape to cover up anything you want to protect.

Although honestly white might be a good contrast, I've never been a huge fan of the blackout theme.

yeah but my rule has always been, matte goes with matte and gloss goes with gloss.

i'm not a huge fan either. just don't think gloss white is gonna go with matte black. i figured matte black is the least conspicuous... the bike is already more than flashy enough. if i could get it in just black i would be so much happier... lol

I paint stuff all the time, some comes out good, some not so much. I would avoid plastidip as it doesn't take wear very well, starts peeling if you handle it enough. First off you need to wash the surface with hot soapy water, then let it dry in the sun for a few hours, then get a can of krylon flat black and wait for a day with 65+ degree weather, and put 6-8 super light coats. Let it dry for 12 hours and your done.

I'd do a matte clear coat instead of a shiny clear coat.

fudge. well i saw that the plastic line of krylon doesn't have a matte clear coat, just this one clear coat option. and that people say its a semi-gloss at most; definitely not a clear gloss ifnish.

Also read that its the same material as the satin black krylon. so it is no different than just adding another coat of the color finish.

fuck it; gonna be an experiment / another project.

since you're budget is $100 you should definitely try out plastidip. it's super easy to work with and if you paint enough layers it could be pretty durable. and hey if you don't like it, just peel that shit off :D

I think after everything said, you are required to go to M&M and see the quality of work and live with it on your helmet!

Thats not a bad idea! Matt really hooked it up for me dude and they did a great job on my bumper and trunk pocket, he even got me a free clearbra for the rear, you should just PM Weeder or call M&M see if Matt can do it for a decent price

i bought it already but amazon has a A+ return policy so. if i don't use it i can just send it back.

after looking at the krylon product it does seem as though the clear coat is the same exact material etc as the paint. so as long as the paint dries well, it should be just as strong as if it was clear coated.

You only need a plastic paint for the first coat. Meaning you can clear coat with whatever finish you want.

honestly every time i'm on the bike, i can't see the helmet, so i ended up not really caring, slacking off and never painting it lmao.

Hahah i know how that goes. I've had a can of plasti-dip in my garage for the past two summers to respray my grill surrounds. It has a good layer of dust on it. Someday....

yup these will sit nicely next to the matte black vinyl i bought 3 years ago to redo my window trim... although now that i have those plastic trim removal tools, it might be easier to get it installed? lol just too lazy and have too many real problems to do it
