    How old are your tires?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Since my S4 only sees maybe 1K miles per year, I hadn't thought to replace my tires until I recently read an article on tire age. Since, I bought my wheels/tires used from another AZ member, I hadn't a clue how old the rubber was. I just checked them the other day to discover they are around 9 years old! Looks like I'll be ordering new tires this Spring. Has anyone kept tires on their car for this long or longer? Rule of thumb is supposed to be about 5 years I read.

"Our experience has been that when properly stored and cared for, most street tires have a useful life in service of between six to ten years. And while part of that time is spent as the tire travels from the manufacturing plant to the manufacturer's distribution center, to the retailer and to you, the remainder is the time it spends on your vehicle."

Looks like you got the right idea

A lot of the wear due to age I believe can be related to how the tires are stored and the changes of temperature that they go through. Leave them outside through East coast winters will see more cracking then keeping them in a garage that is temperature controlled

tires wear externally, but also begin to break down over time. not rolling the car can 'flat spot' the tires and create stress points in the tire. the tire can rot from moisture and other contaminants from the inside out. the compound can also break down and 'dry out' from excess heat cycling and age.

bottom line, safety and performance tend to decrease over time. That said, you're probably not racing this or anything, so i might just use what you got until it shreds itself. But i don't really fear flat tires too much unless i'm doing high speed corners.

if you're gonna replace em, you might as well have some fun and do some donuts or something =P

The way I drive and the miles (~20k/yr) I go through a set in about 18 months. I like to keep a lot of tread though because bald tires and stage 3 in Florida rain is not good.

Tires and rubber in general dry rots over time.
That's why even if they have good tread after a
a couple years it's required to get new tires.
The tire can start seperating amongst other
    issues.

If I recall, tire replacement is required across most of Europe at the 7 year mark from production date. There is a special from dateline or 60 minutes or something of the like about a large class action lawsuit to standardize laws on this in the us since they don't care here. Plenty if examples of brand new tires that are 7-10 years old have killed people from tread separation. I wouldn't put my wife on a set if tires more than a few years old personally.

Good stuff. Good thinking on thrashing the old tires before putting new ones on:)

''I'm going to replace my 9 y/o tires so I don't thrash my rims or my car''

''well, since I'm buying new tires, and this guy is telling me to do something on the internet(the internet is never wrong) I'm going to intentionally thrash my tires which may cause them to explode and then thrash my rims/car.''

Easy now, if anything was thinking maybe a few donuts in a wide open parking lot. But I probably won't even do that. But, thanks for that reference, I didn't know they suspected the tires were to blame.

    lol at BLMlozz.

me and a dozen other guys do this every weekend. nobody i've seen has crashed due to a popped tire, ever. frankly it's slicker when you're on the wires than it is when it pops.

I'm hoping your joking, but if not, hike up your skirt and live a little. fear of the unknown =P

I somewhat inferred that, which is why I tried to paraphrase your intentions with a dash of satire, but then I found the PW link and boom-- cherry on top.

    yeah figured it was satirical.

having to wipe off a little rubber on the edge of the fender when the tread separates is the worst outcome I've ever seen though, nothing permanent. Insert all necessary disclaimers here =P
