    Fuel pump likley?

B6 S4 w/ 122k miles. Battling a crank-no-start issue. In the past it has intermittently been rough to start - maybe only 2-3 times in the year and a half I've owned it, but would always start after a couple tries.

I've tested power to the fuse, and can confirm that the relay is "clicking" on. The tricky thing is there is no power to the pump harness when cranking, but when I hot wire the pump to the battery I don't hear anything. Leaning toward the pump being bad, but the no power to the harness part is stumping me.

Could it be a bigger problem than the pump? What are symptoms of timing chain issues? Would it even crank? It does not have any of the typical symptoms of a bad tensioner...

Luckily, the fuel pump is an easy thing to check on our cars. Just unhook the fuel line right next to the air intake, run it into a empty 2 liter bottle, crank it, see if any fuel comes out. I would say it sounds more like the fuel filter if that hasn't recently been replaced. Definitely don't just assume you have timing chain issues.

I would highly doubt it's the fuel filter. Even at 122k it should be fairly clean. People are way too quick to blame that and just start replacing parts hoping to get lucky.

You need to use the Bentley manual and check the diagnostic steps to test the fuel system.

I'm in the same boat. Mine started with the faulty relay. Replaced that and car started instantly. A week later the pump started making noises. Changed filter and the car ran fine a couple days. Then the fuel pump got even louder and finally died.

Yea you just don't thro on parts hoping to get lucky. But in this case, the $23 relay and $64 filter (which you should replace when doing the pump) are marginal compared to $400-$600 you're gonna pay for the pump.

I got this update from my mechanic "No power to management fuse. Several ECM codes related to power issues. There are two pumps. Primary and transfer pump."

    Anyone have insight?

Looking like the fuel pump when we realized that the engine needs to crank in order to send power to the pump. Can anyone verify location of the pump as passenger side or driver side?

Yep mine was on the passenger side. Later ones are drivers side. Ended up just being the pump. Glad to have it back on the road.
