My radio went into safe mode. i was simply interested in if the code is determined by the vin of the vehicle or by the serial number on the back of the unit. Ill be calling the dealership tomorrow but for my sake i would love to know now.

    thanks

Vin. If you are lucky enough the dealership will give you the code. If not, expect to pay for it. Look in your owner's manual pouch thingy and see if the PO left it in there for you.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

I was told if you give the dealer both codes they can't make you pay for it, since they can see that the radio matches the vin and it wasn't stolen. BUT I have never needed to get a code from a deal so idk.

If you have the VIN and the serial# on the radio, just call Audi USA and they will give it to you.
I bought a radio of ebay and the guy didn't know the code, but in the google search said that both were necessary, which is one of the reasons the dealership charged so much. Labor for removal and reinstall. The weird thing is, the radio doesn't go into safe mode, but I didn't realize until after I installed it.

Yep, Audi USA is surprisingly happy to help. You have to sort of register yourself as an Audi owner with the VIN. I had a hard time finding the code on my radio. I ended up bringing it out into the sun and then I could see the laser etched number on the side.

As an added bonus, I got a call a week later telling me there was an active recall for coils on the 13 year old car.
