Okay, I replaced the speed sensor that is behind the drivers side front wheel last summer, didn't work, but that fall I was driving and the speedometer randomly worked for .1 of a mile, I was so excited until it stopped working again. I have the magnetic drive wheel ring purchased but it seems to be a pain in the ass to get that cover off the side of the transmission to get to it. Is it possible that I just have a wiring issue? The RPM gauge works fine, (Yes my rev is limited to 5200 rpm), the fuel gauge works when it wants, the coolant temp and oil temp gauges work well. Just absolutely no speedo and sketchy gas gauge. I have the ABS Light on solid, and a blinking Brake light which to my understanding is the ABS Module (common for b5) I have 3 codes. the p0501 for speedo and p0432 which is main catalyst bank 2 below threshold and one for my secondary air injection pump. Which from my understanding pushes fresh air through the cats. Sorry for getting off topic just wanted to list all the information and hopefully someone can get my on the right track.

What brand sensor did you replace it with? I wouldn't trust anything but a brand new OEM sensor. Better yet, try a known to be working sensor off a friends car if you can. After that I would check for continuity in the wires before going in to replace the magnetic ring. I've done it, it's no fun. It also didn't end up fixing my problem since I had a bad sensor all along. I had replaced it with a Meyle sensor that was faulty from the factory, a used OEM sensor fixed my problem.

I replaced mine two yrs ago with genuine Audi sensor from GAP and never looked back at it. You can get the OE sensor for $32 + shipping from GAP.
