The medium or device is being loaded. Please wait

I've had one or more instances in the past where the MMI would take it's sweet time starting up for the music/audio functionality with the "The medium or device is being loaded. Please wait" message. While this is happening, NAV and other stuff in the MMI works and usually eventually the music loads and starts playing after 1 min or so.

Yesterday evening for the ride home I got the "please wait" message but it never finished loading. NAV and telephone worked IIRC but the audio was kaput for the whole 22min trip. On the way home I even tried stopping and turning off the car and opening the door twice to see if I could reset it somehow but it didn't help.

This morning however the MMI fired right up and worked fine and was playing on a song I don't even recall listening to before on a new album I recently loaded. Almost like it had been playing music for it's own personal enjoyment while I slept. hmm..

I have connected at the moment: SD card 1 = 32GB, SD card 2= 16GB, cable = 1GB USB stick drive, CDROM in dash player.

Perhaps I have too much plugged in and I will remove everything except the 32GB card but has anyone ran into this before?

I read one webpage via google that said it could be updates to the MMI pushed out wirelessly and it hammers the system until it's done updating. I have no idea other than maybe to see if I can check MMI rev in the menu somewhere and write it down and see if it is updating from time to time.

I'm a little concerned if I decide to flash the ECU and the MMI gets worse I'll have to take it in and deflash etc.

    Thanks for reading.

I don't believe they update mmi software remotely, what if someone has no 3g connection? I copied all my music to the hard drive and have never experienced this issue, sorry.

I just had this EXACT problem. I took in to the dealership and they did an update according to a TSB. I posted it here a few days ago. I'll see if I can find it. Give me a minute and I'll post the TSB number that me SA put on the paperwork. Since then I've had no problems. BTW, I have nothing plugged in to my system. Only the T-moblie SIM card.

    Ok, here's what my paperwork says exactly;

"Check for the bluetooth operation and check for the phone version, proceed to check for TSB and found TSB 2026390/5, Follow TSB, reset system and check with customer bluetooth operation again and everything working properly."

So far, since having this done, the BT audio has worked perfectly. Hope this helps, take care.

Holy media batman! You definitely have quite a few media devices plugged in there. My guess is the MMI is re-caching the data, which means it needs to go through and read whatever you have hooked up all over again. If those cards have plenty of media on there, and multiple folders, that could be causing your issue.

A couple of complete guesses as to what you could try:

-If you have NAV, dump your data into the 'jukebox'
-What class of SD card do you have? I can't recall how fast a card the MMI can support, but getting a faster card may help if you don't already have one.
-Try and consolidate your media down to 1 or 2 sd cards instead?

That's not so bad. I've had it happen to me a few times where it eventually tells me that no device is connected (iPod). Power cycled MMI, power cycled iPod, restarted car, changed source and changed back, nothing worked. I finally had to unplug the cable from my iPod and plug it back in and the MMI found it right away......so frustrating.

The updates could potentially come via satellite broadcast (unlikely) or it could also be that it's a different problem only affecting 3g cars. Who knows. I thought it a bit far fetched as well and I'm clearly grasping here. I have no idea, just throwing some stuff out there.

One of my chief complaints about the jukebox is that it doesn't organize the way I want it to. Maybe I need to RTFM more but I tried a few things and I couldn't get it to organize by directory structure vs what the MMI wanted. In other words, I organize my music in directories on a PC the way I like it, drag and drop to SD card and import into jukebox and, IIRC, it presented the structure as by artist, album etc which is not what I want. I want it the way the SD card does it- just as I copied it.

Correct me if that exists somewhere and I missed it but that's one of the annoyances of the music in MMI.

Don't think the satellite thing is plausible, but who knows...

Yea, best strategy is to take the directory structure you want and rename 'mix' albums or whatever 'directory' to have the same artist/album, and tag with the same art. It's not ideal (since you've lost the actual artist), but as long as you keep the total number of albums down, you can scroll sideways through your collection via album art. It takes a while to get it right, and you need to use the correct program to tag the tracks with art (I used mediamonkey).

But I can see why one could be annoyed, especially with tons of single songs, whereas I tend to like to have complete albums...so it doesn't bother me much.

Ok thanks for that. I will probably call my local audi dealer and see if they have anything on it. I wasn't able to pull up that specific TSB on internet searches but I guess it could not show up for one reason or another esp since it's not safety related.

    Thanks again!

The MMI cannot be updated via remote link. You need to go into the dealership for those updates to the MMI and have them done. It will cost money unless they can see a problem with it listed under a campaign or TSB pertaining to it at which point, they'll follow the steps in the TSB to solve the issue and if that means updating the MMI software, they'll do that. Be aware that these updates require the car to be plugged into the Audi diagnostics equipment... the same one that checks the ECU for aftermarket tunes, so if you plan on getting these updates done, be aware of TD1 flagging issues unless you revert to stock. And no, after the updates, flashing back to your tuned setup from a tuner/dealer won't overwrite what was just updated on the MMI since the two systems are separate and not the same. The MMI drives everything else electronic in the car that doesn't deal with drivetrain. That's an easy way to know what controls what.

These are good suggestions and I already pulled the CDROM and smaller SD card as it was just a subset of what the larger one had in it. I forgot to pull the cable in the glovebox to the 1GB USB stick drive but I'll do that today. Hopefully it speeds up the MMI boot sequence.

I have a new/modern sandisk 32GB SDHC card which worked fine when I first inserted it months ago. It prob has about 18-20GB of music on it.

I really would like to use the jukebox but as I mentioned in another post above, the issue with sorting by artist THEN album for how I like to view my collection keeps me from using it. My 11 BMW 335xi did this just fine and had some other features I liked over the the Audi MMI but I digress.

I don't have the page link handy but I think the part of MMI that was claimed to potentially be updateable was google maps and it was theorized that such an update could perhaps upset MMI. I still think it's a little far fetched but I threw it out there anyways in case someone knew something I did not.

Thanks for the TD1 warning and that is something I was thinking of when I posted this- as much as I'd like my MMI to work without issue I'd also like to get a tune soon and not have to remove it to fix the MMI shortly after. So better to address the MMI sooner than later if there are any known issues was my thought.
