Ordered HREs for my S6! Width Question.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I placed a deposit for a set of HRE is 21" x 10" at Wheels Boutique. I'll let HRE as well as Ben and Frank at WB take care of the offsets as they are experts at it. I won't yet disclose the model, color, and other details, since I'll post with pictures as soon as they arrive. But I do have a question for the forum.

I ordered 21" x 10". Wheels Boutique claims I can go as wide as 10.5, but that sounds a little too aggressive. I asked for 10" Does anyone have experience with this size and are there any rubbing issues? Any input? I know Juggernaut had HREs in this size and I didn't see any reports of rubbing on the forum.

The tires will be Michelin Super Sport 265/30/21.

I bought Juggernaut's HREs. Haven't mounted them yet but from his pix, they look perfect. Think 10.5 would be too aggressive.

    Pix here: http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2845209
Sold: 2013 : Ice Silver, Carbon inlays, APR tuned, 21x10 HRE S101, AWE exhaust, Carbon fiber mirrors from RS6, Drilled rotors, H&R lowering module, Escort 9500ci, Ceramic brake pads, Deval carbon fiber rear diffuser, Xpel Ultimate, Opticoat

    Sold: 2009

Whoever said money can't buy happiness...doesn't own a (tuned) S6.

^what he said. You shouldn't experience any rubbing with the appropriate offset.

I find there's a bit more stretch than I want even with 265/30/21 on a 9.5" wide wheel, but I've always preferred a square setup.

Thanks guys. I'll get better concaveness going with the 10", but 9.5" will fit the tire better. What would you guys do? 9.5" or 10"? Michelin's specs on the PSS 265/30/21 recommends a 9" to 10" rim. So I'll be at the upper end, but not out of recommendation. I still have a day or so to change my mind.

I don't like stretch either so I we any 9.5"

BUT your in luck as Michelin is releasing the 285/30/21 PSS this month. I would do that size on a 10. The issue is the S6 can't take as much tire and offset as the 7 so they will have to consider that.

Thanks. You S7 guys have more space in there, I think I'll stick with 9.5s and keep it looking more natural. I'll let you know which way I go. Also as inspired by you, WB is going to paint my front calipers red with the white Brembo stencil when the wheels arrive. I didn't order the same wheel as you though - went a different route even though I was tempted by your style.

I have 265/35 on my M3 on a 10" wheel and it is a bit stretched. A 265/30 will definitely be too stretched IMO. I am running 265/35/20 on 20x9 ET 35 and it is just perfect.

The stretch will all depend on the brand of tire you go with, as some brands have stiffer/softer sidewalls then others. Aspect ratio plays a part in it as well.

    Aesthetics is very important.

But, you'll be sitting inside the car and driving it most of the time ... please check the wheels actual weight with tires.

Increased unsprung weight will just make the car more sluggish during pick up.

IMO, I would not go bigger than 20"

I know Rays (Volk Racing) G25 wheel 20" x 8.5J Et 36 (Similar to stock specs) is ~6.6 lbs lighter (Rim only) than the stock S6 rims

Same size, better looking (subjective), way lighter and subsequently much better pick up ... IMO, those are the criteria I'll be looking at when changing rims.

On a car this big and heavy with a braking system that is so big and heavy I don't think a few lbs of wheel weight is going to make any difference. That said, you can certainly get forged 21" wheels that are lighter than the stock 20". I think more of an issue is the compromise on ride quality with 21", with no benefit whatsoever in terms of handling, and minor to no aesthetic benefit.

I'm with you on the 20" wheels for the C7/ 6 Series cars; IMO 21" is too much wheel with little added benefit.

    Just for comparison,

    Stock S6:
    20 x 8.5j et 45 is 12.5 kg each

    Rays G25 (Forged Aluminum & Magnesium mono-block):
    20 x 8.5j et 36 is 9.5kg each

That's 3 kg (6.6 lbs) each or 12 kg (26 lbs) total unsprung weight savings

    With a 7 multiplier, that's 84 kg (185 lbs) sprung weight equivalent ...

It's like having 2 hot chicks sitting in your back seat all the time

..:for reference, my P101 in 21x9.5" was 21.8 lbs.

Ride quality is perfectly fine, the car is in air and more than apt for a very very smooth ride.

As far as cosmetics....the ideal cosmetic size in the 7 is 21", the S6 I think you can go either 20 or 21 depending in design.

21's look great on the S6 despite having a little less girth than the S7. Can't comment on the ride quality but I doubt there is that much difference if going with a good lightweight wheel like HRE's. Love the red calibers. I'll probably get them done at some point as well but without the brembo logo.

Thanks for all the input. I'm as confused as ever, LOL.

The wheels in 21 are a definite. These forged wheels will weigh less than the stock 20s. The S6 is a big car with big wells. My VMR V708 20s look small on the car, so that's one of my reasons to upgrade the wheels. The huge question is 9.5 or 10. I've asked WB to discuss it with HRE. We have board members with 21 x 10 wheels and 265/30/21 PSS tires and they don't look overly stretched. Perhaps a bit rounded, but not stretched.

The fact that almost all of you think I should go 9.5 is cause for serious consideration and that's why I'm trying to leave no stone unturned before the wheels are cut.

My order has to be in today to avoid losing my place in production, so I had to make a decision. I read this post from Chef which was helpful too: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...the-S7-Project

I don't think the 265 is going to be too big of a stretch on the 10" wheel. It's not going to look like an import special and it's within Michelin's range of rim width for that tire. Frank and Ben have assured me it's going to look tight and classy, so I'm going with the 10" wide wheels. Juggernaut was running this exact setup prior to the polar vortex descending on the North and it looks good all around.

I've chosen a forged, monblock wheel and the while the width will be the same from front to back, the wheels will be cut with different concaveness to give the illusion that they are a staggered setup. I lose the ability to rotate, but the aesthetics will make it worthwhile IMO. All of these are big decisions and all of them come with pros and cons. At the end of the day I have to go with what I think will look great and work well, while keeping the quattro happy with equal widths. I think I've done that - for my taste. You guys can be the judge when I get them installed and post photos.

    Appreciate the help.

I think 10's were the way to go.

I think the reason you think the VMR looks small is that it has decent sized inner "lip" that make the wheel opening smaller. A 20" wheel with a different design might not look so as small. Anyway, in terms of width...9.5 ET40mm

I agree that's the reason the V708s look small. I don't want to spend HRE money and regret I bought them 1" too small.

Can't argue with that....For HRE money, you want it EXACTLY the way you want it. I also went with VMR, and if I decide I don't really like it after a while, I won't be kicking myself.

The VMR were actually a blessing in disguise for me. I've only had them for 3 months, but I've had horrible luck in those three months, so I sort of sacrificed them to the car gods. I had an out of body experience and accidentally curb-rashed the hell out of one. Then I ran over some sort of angle iron on I-95 and gouged another one, and finally while I was installing my lowering links, I dropped one accidentally and it fell face-first onto asphalt. The rough asphalt nicked and chipped the paint on yet another wheel in about 5 spots. I'm going to throw them on eBay, but I'll be lucky to get $300 for all 4. They need to be refinished. So I saved my OEM 20s and had I bought the HREs 3 months ago, I'd be royally pissed and they'd be back at HRE to get fixed - for a lot of money surely.

Hopefully those car gods were happy with my sacrifice to them and have blessed me with many years of rash free wheel luck! I'm going to really need it starting in about 4 weeks!

You know....this is exactly the reason I don't have HREs (or alike) on my S6 which is my daily driver. If it was not my daily, I would certainly be looking at that level of wheel. I had HREs on my 2007 RS4. Just gorgeous. Anyway, good luck with it all. Can't wait to see them. Living where you do, I don't think you will have an issue with 21". Living where I do, I need the extra sidewall of 20s.
