Going to look at S4, with a new motor...

    Hi friends,

Going to look at a B6 S4 this week, after doing a car fax I read it had the motor replaced by an Audi dealership at 96k miles and the car currently has 115k miles (the new seller knows nothing about the motor job as he bought the car from auction, he told me if car fax says it has a new motor then it does.). I'm a pretty inquisitive person so I called the dealer that did the motor job and they where actually pretty nice to talk to you. They told me the replaced the motor 2 years ago and the bill was $18k to get this done. They did confirm this was a brand new engine but could not tell me why the old motor was replaced. The service agent said it either was because of oil consumption or jumped timing. At the time this all went down the car did fall under its "certified pre-owned" warranty... This was about all the service advisor could tell me as he said there are some confidentiality guidelines he does have to follow. but again was very helpful and confirmed all the work.

Other then the timing chain issues, and oil consumption what should I be looking at next for other issues? I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on this car because of the history of the new motor...

Any help or guidance would be great as I currently have a deposit on it until I test drive it later in the week.

    Thank you

I bought my S4 for pretty much the exact same reason. Having a brand new motor is like re-setting the clock and no need to worry about chain rattle or oil consumption.

When I bought my Avant it had 116k miles on the body but got a new engine at 97k miles. To me that's a brand new motor. I bought the car for this reason and am still pretty happy with my decision. The car now has 154k miles so I have done about 40k miles on this S with no real problems motor-wise. The chain rattle has now appeared, but doesn't scare me like it does others since this isn't my first S4. I still have pretty much 0 oil consumption. This is really the main issue to beware of. Timing issues and other problems can be fixed, scored cylinders no so much.

Thanks BCsniper for the reply this is my kind of of my thinking as well. I'm not new the VAG world but wanted to ask because I scare myself lurking around this forum. I'm hoping if I pull the trigger I can get the Audi dealership to give me some type of paper work on the motor job so I can have it for resale down the road.

.....I didn't get much from the dealer either when I asked so I had to assume that the least was done.

From what I can tell, the longblock was all that was replaced. Starter/alternator/ A/C compressor/clutch&flywheel were all just re-installed so be prepared that you may need a new clutch fairly soon unless somebody else has already replaced it recently. Same goes for A/C compressor since they like to die every 60-75k miles

Yeah, I figured the clutch has not been done, the seller did tell me did replace the motor mounts so that is reason to believe it was just the long block as well.

Sorry to hear. It would have been great if it was in good condition. I bought mine with a new longblock replaced under warranty at 95k. Everything else was mint condition.

I purchased mine with a new motor at the upper 90k range. Dealer changed the motor as well. I was able to get the dealer to send me all service records.

Thanks guys, it was real sad... seats torn up, ebay grille, had B5 S4 badges, and was missing the classic S4 wheels... Not to mention all the other scary stuff, like duct tape holding shit together under hood.

On a good note, I found a clean one owner Moro Blue S4 and I pick it up on Sunday!
