How to tell if you need a new speaker harness or tweeter replacement?

I was having the same issue as like 90% of the people on this forum where my drivers/passengers side speakers (tweeters) would randomly cut out and pop back on. I removed and clean both harnesses, now the passenger side works 99% of the time, when it cuts out all I have to do is turn the volume up a tiny bit and it works again. The drivers side is a different story. It maybe works 40-50% of the time and I have removed and cleaned it twice already. I used several q-tips, a little rubbing alcohol, compressed air, but still no luck. My question is, when do you know that the problem isn't actually just the tweeter, or if it is a bad harness that actually needs completely replaced? I don't want to spend $100 on a new tweeter and get it installed if it won't fix the problem, likewise $100+ for a new harness installed if the tweeter is bad. Any thoughts?

You could try swapping the speakers. If the problem ratio (ie 90% working) follows the speaker, its a bad speaker. If it doesn't follow, you know its the wiring.

    Good luck!

I've got this same situation with both of my B6's. But for me it seems to be more of the rear driver's side speaker which cuts out more than any others. If I turn the volume up to 14, then everything works 100% of the time. Otherwise, it's intermittent cutting out like the OP has.

    Aren't the tweeters soldered in?

Jiggle the door boot. Mine was having the same issue. I massaged the door harness a few times and I haven't had an issue since. Worth a shot!

I don't believe so. Its just a small clip you have to pull off IIRC.

Hmm, I will try and pop off the speaker cover and see.
