Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In this video I tell you my problem, I have about 130k on the car and its been passed down from my dad to me.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtPd2...Nv4pN8LcSNHNMw

Its been annoying me very much, I planned on throwing some mods on it, but now knowing the conditions of the car, Im not sure anymore.

And I am a beginner on this, much advice would be appreciated.

First off, the Tip won't allow you just shift up unless your moving, and its "time" to shift. It's not a true manual, the transmission still does the thinking for the most part. As for the grinding, I don't know.

    what v2rider said.
never do what you did again. start the car, put it into Drive (D), and then you can move it to the right (manual-tiptronic mode). be gentle and stop jamming the gear lever so quickly or you'll fuck it up in no time.

Audi A4 B7 Quattro Tiptronic problem

Wow, that's bad. I think it's safe to say the culprit is a loose nut behind the wheel.

Tip is not a manual and will not shift unless it's at the correct rpm. Also, quit slamming everything around. The grinding is probably the parking/shifter pawl, it's detents or solenoid going bad.

X3. It will protect itself from you trying to destroy it. The grinding is troubling however. With 150k on it, maybe you should just keep it in D Until you understand the car better. You shouldn't be trying to beat it up lol

Haha, thank you all, I am sorry I didn't really know it could go bad from doing that, but I did drive it and I tried putting it into tiptronic mode, but it wouldn't go into it, I'd have to force it into it, which now I just learnt you're not supposed to do it.

Did tip work while driving? Could you shift up and down when moving?

Yes, the tip did work, but it still made that grinding noise, I don't want to put it into that mode anymore, but it frustrates me why it is making that sound.

Thanks a lot V2Rider! I'll let you know if that works or not, I was thinking about opening up the casing and checking it out too.

Also if I may ask, after fixing up the A4 to normal conditions, i'll have around 2 grand, should I mod the car out a bit? Or keep it the same?

This is a picture of it:

Do not open the tranny up unless you are completely capable of following this DIY... It is extremely crticial to be able to get all of the necessary fluid into the tranny and you cannot due so without using Vag-Com. Take it to the dealer if you cannot do it.

This is a whole different transmission to service compared to others. As stated, it has to be done perfect, with the right fluid. If you are unsure of yourself, just be safe and have the dealer do it. Get the transmission squared away, among checking everything else to be sure it's ALL up to par before modding. I have spent about 3k on my car now, and havn't touched a tune yet. Things you will want to check:

    Updated Diverter Valve
    Updated PCV
    Cam Follower
    Timing components
    All maitenance related items
    Ect ect ect

I am FINALLY getting a tune this month, but I spent some coin making sure everything was up to the task beforehand. Take care of the car, and most of the time it will take care of you. If you go throw money at modding it before dealing with anything else, you will have a giant paper weight in your driveway......

As most of the post state for their selfs, don't do it if your not comfortable. I had to replace my TCM, so I had all that done. I didn't want to mess with the tranny lol.

Does tuning make that much of a difference to the way it runs? Haha, thanks for all the advice too! :D

My first car was a 1991 Camry, and it didn't really require any tune ups since it was so old and did so many miles it went to the moon and halfway back.

Yes.......it's a whole different car after a tune. I got to try out the APR for a bit. It was a completely different experience with a long lasting smile.

APR tuning is different from a regular tuning?

No, any tune is what I'm referring to vs stock. APR just happens to be the only one to let you try before you buy

Ahh I see, I discovered a new problem now on the highway, Im not sure Im gonna keep this Audi with these many problems, I might trade it in for something else, do you know what the value would be?

And the problem is when I was coming off a ramp, inevitably having to rev at high RPM's, white-blue smoke started pouring out, and whenever the car is in park it is over revving, like around 1,200.

I'm guessing your turbo may be going out, or massive oil is being dumped.

The revs that high would make me change the PCV, and check all vacuum related connections

Definitely check the PCV and all vacuum hoses for the smoke issue. PCV is a known issue with these cars. Not sure on the tip sound as you push it over. Mine just glides over. Hard to see anything falling/getting in the way down there. Let us know if you figure it out.

Tuning is very different than a tune up.

Tuning is referring to remapping the ecu for performance gains.

That's the thing, I have to put oil quite often cause it seems that it just disappears or burns off very quickly. The dashboard would say low oil and the dip stick would say minimum, so I am guessing there is a leak as well, or is it just burning off really quickly? And @Flexcj5, what would a tune up be then if tuning is for ecu? ALSO the timeframe between adding oil is every 2-3 weeks.

Not so much the time between adding oil, but the mileage is what I would want to know. Are you adding oil every 50, 500, 1000 miles?

Tune up: Spark plugs, oil change, air filter, top off fluids, ect...
ECU Tune: ReMap of the computer to raise Boost, rpm limiter, Timing advance, ect... all done through the OBD2

It's bad, yes. Your A4 has some major issues, or they can become major ones if you don't fix them! Looks like you're young and don't know much about cars, maybe you should take that money and have someone look into these problems and assess the damage. Then go from there!

I had oil consumption in that range last year. Dealer replaced piston rings under Audi goodwill and now I have to add oil every 2000 miles or so.

Okay, I phoned a local friend that knows about mechanics, he said it'd be a misfire in the cylinders and/or a valve gasket leak .

Not disrespecting your friend, but he doesn't know audi. The valve cover gasket, maybe, but you would have oil spraying in your engine if your losing that much. I can almost gaurantee, with the blue smoke, that the rings are shot. I would ALMOST bet my car on it.

Definitely^^^ That's using a lot of oil. I know you said it was a hand me down, but did your dad ever have it serviced anywhere? Surely someone would catch the oil consumption and have some type of recommendation. Definitely needs to be checked over, but it's not sounding good at all.

If you are doing this there's an issue. I battled this for 6 months and then BAM - needed a new engine. I took it to Audi welllll before and they tried diagnosing many times to no avail and then only covered 50% of the work for a rebuilt block. I would be careful.

Also- I'm assuming the car was on when you did that? Sounded like you were just str8 up jamming the gearbox with the car being on "on" but not actually started? Anyhow... If the car is started and break pressed you can shift to drive and then over to tip without moving ... I do it all the time when pulling out from parking. You don't need to be moving to put it in tip. That's just not true. Good luck. My 2 cents would be to keep your $2k especially at your age and wait till you have more money to buy a newer audi or lower milage preowned whatever.

Mmm, I see, the grinding noise was apparently because someone spilt soda over the gearstick, and it was very very sticky and dried up that it was causing this problem, and no it hasn't been service since my dad bought it from the previous owner, besides the brakes, was over a year.

No....you don't. If your plan is to trade it/sell it, you are going to spend more money than you will get for the car after all said and done. Personally, I would get what I could as is, save your current cash, and find a GOOD used Audi
