Suggestions on new inexpensive/good quality summer tires for my son's TT

Our winter season is coming to an end, and my son wore out his summer tires prior to winter. I ned to find a quality, decent mileage wear, summer specific tire.

    Looking specifically for 225/40ZR18.

I'm considering Dunlop Sport Maxx RTs through Tire Rack at $540 for a full set. If it were my car, I'd probably put some Pilots on it, but if I put a set of PS2s on his car, it would set me back about $862 for a set and last half as long. Suggestions?

Oh, and yes, I live vicariously through him. I had a Renault LeCar in highschool, not a TT. Talk about a chick magnet car...

I've had nothing but good luck with Sumitomo HTR-ZIII on my A6, my TT, and my Golf - i've been through probably 14 of them now.

I've been looking at the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. They've had very good reviews. But I haven't heard anything about the tire you mentioned.
Have you owned the pilots before?
I would make a recommendation but I've only experience with truck tires...

I have pss on my s5 and the grip is good. But the tire life sucks. A good compromise tire I tried were the hankook Ventus v12 evo. Little less grip than pss. But last twice as long and half the price practically.

What kind of mileage did you get out of the PSS's vs the Hankooks?

I don't remember the exact numbers, but the PSS's lasted something sad like 12k miles or so. but the Hankooks lasted something like 22k miles and my driving style pretty much stayed the same through out all those miles. All on stage 1 with a few launches on each set. On the hankooks, had taken the car out on mountain roads with a few friends and it was able to hang with a tuned evo. PSS's never saw mountain roads and they still had crappy life.

+1 on Hankook V12 evo2, you'll lose a little ride comfort (PSS absorbs more inconsistencies with road surface) but the treadwear is the same if not better and they're half the price.

Well I ordered two of the PSS's for now. I plan on pretty gentle everyday driving and mountain roads 1-2 times per month.
I'm going to look into the V12's for my next set. The guy at discount tire recommended the Road Huggers so I'll also look into those.

So far I've been loving my PSS's. They are quiet, relatively comfortable, and super grippy! They do wear fast but I'm expecting 25,000 miles as that's my warranty.

If you can get 25k out of pss, more power to you. There was just no way I was getting the same mileage out of my pss when I had them on my s5. I'm trying toyo t1s and so far they're okay. They seem to grip ok although I haven't really pushed the car yet. They do have better wet handling characteristics than pss though.
