FINALLY! After months of ownership, and a ton of work, got my S4 out on the road....

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I think I am really getting the handle of being a B5 S4 owner.

    How she rolled out:

    How she came back:

Oh yeah, this happened in the middle...

Not 100% sure, but I think i burned through a fuel line on the passenger side. Explains the smoke (which I thought had gone away) from the initial turn-overs in my garage.

Power steering was non-existent as well.

Silver lining: Car was already going back into my garage for caliper powder coating. I'll fix this problem at the same time.

You two still aren't playing nicely I see lol

Did it smell like raw fuel? I would think a punctured fuel line would drain a decent quantity of fluid rather quickly.

Hopefully you'll get it sorted soon.

It did smell like fuel, or something else that can get you high in a few minutes of exposure. I can't trace the leak, even now. There was gas all over the engine, and onto the hood insulation. I am baffled, until I can get under the car after work tomorrow.
Can't seem to find any related problems on the forums either.

Is it the POS fuel supply line to the fuel rail? They are known to leak after they've been taken off and put back on many times.

There's a pic of what leaks in this thread post #4.

Sounds like an injector may have shot out from the fuel rail? Did you use injector clips?

It might be, but it is not at the connection shown in the thread above. That is on there securely, and there is no leakage around there. Might be on the other side of that hose tho...

Negative. All injectors and coils are stills securely installed.

The big splat happened when I was coasting to a stop, not boosting.
Problem did not occur when I drove the car for a longer period of time before I pulled the engine and trans.

    Kinda confused right now.

Well hot wire your fuel pump like in this vid I made (but never posted because I didn't like how I was holding my cell phone)
and then go look for leaking gas.

Good call! I may have to try that if there isn't something visibly obvious.\
Were you using a 12V power source?

Couldn't I just turn the key in the ignition to prime the fuel pump and attempt to pressurize the lines?

Yes. You'll want to have someone crank the engine while you look for the leak. I would suggest having a fire extinguisher on hand too. The person doing the key work should not be hard of hearing...

    10-4

I was planning on getting a fire extinguisher after work anyway. I hope the leak is apparent, and doesn't hide. Although the amount of fuel it spilled doesn't make me think it'll keep hiding for long.

Just have a friend use a wire to jump the fuel pump relay while you look for leaks.

Not actual relay, just using this pic to get the point across... A relay is just a heavy duty on/off switch, so your are replacing the relay with some wire to close the circuit and turn the fuel pump on.

So run a wire, with one end on the left, and the other end on the left? (See below)

what the hell are you talking about??? lol You just MSPainted a line over the existing line

you are just making a connection across two terminals "jumping/bypassing" the throw of the relay.

Pull the fuel pump relay and take a large gauge piece of wire with two male spade terminals on it and jump it across the two large(wide) terminals in the fusebox where the relay went.

Oh, my monitor was too dark, I thought the wire went out of the picture.
If you said "Short the relay," I would have gotten it.

I did enjoy it for about 17 minutes yesterday.

Is that the work to joy ratio of these cars?

It's been said before, but you gotta love these cars to keep them. But you must be insane to buy one. Love that ratio above! I gotta say though, had my car for over 3 years of happy DD, put 74k miles on her. It's been all about the smiles per gallon! Get her fixed and out on the road again!

Honestly, I am saddened that I don't have the car in the garage to wrench on in my free time. I am a Mechanical Engineer, and love learning new things, of which this car has taught me a lot.
I know about these cars, and know they are tops when they run properly.

    Found the problem.
#6 Injector was leaking like a siv (when there was fuel pressure). This was due to the fuel rail retaining bolt being too long, and not properly securing the brackets to the manifold.

Does anybody know where to get QTY2 intake manifold bolts, and QTY1 fuel rail to manifold bolts? The blue ones?
Every time I go to a junkyard, the VWs and Audis are V6's, and their bolts are wayyyy too long.

    Stainless from local hardware store?
When you get it back together, to test, activating most any output test in vagcom will turn the pump on.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

    I don't have a cable...or a laptop. Yet.

I simply turned the key, and saw the spray out of the passenger side of the engine bay. Visually, it was pretty obvious.

Are these the Fuel Rail bolts you were looking for?

    http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-All_Ro...take/ES252647/

Or as stated measure the length you need and just go to a hardware or specialty fastener store and find the right Size&Pitch in the length you need.

Bingo. I am one of those people who likes to keep everything OEM or better. I'll just get some meausrements and head to Lowe's tomorrow. Maybe I'll find the proper ones and replace them in the future.

Slow your roll and double check your work. Mark and bag bolts in groups. This user error could have been a total loss, especially considering you didn't even have a fire extinguisher on hand before this happened. Fuel problems are scary dude.

Gasoline auto ignites around ~500°F. Just idle and part throttle will not likely get the exhaust components hot enough to ignite the fuel (especially with the manifolds dual wall construction), but if you start getting into WOT... watch out.

"Likely" is the key word in that statement.
