Just want to say hello and show everyone what I have :) 96 Swapped 1.8T AEB

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    So, Hello!

    My car is a 1996 B5 A4 with a 1.8T AEB swap from a 1998 Passat.

I've done a lot to it since I got it in November 2012 and I still have a lot more that I would like to accomplish.

    Things I've done:
    Neuspeed lowering springs.
    Exhaust
    B6 Wheels
2001 B5 Headlights, taillights, rear lights, and rearview mirrors
1999 B5 front and rear seats
    Ultra suede red trim
Carbon fiber coilpack cover and air box

Lots more but thats the good stuff ;)

Anyway, here are more pics and if anyone wants to know more, let me know! Thanks for looking.

Well I got the engine/ whole passat for $500 after cutting it all up and scrapping it, I made $560. I kept having issues with the v6 12 valve and it was time for an upgrade.

Basically, I got the engine for free and installed it myself. Yeah, it was a good sized project and not doing any performance things to it while I had it out of the car doesn't really make sense, but I needed something more reliable and better on gas. I got both with the 1.8. my Audi's original miles are around 280,000. The new motor had only 143,000. Besides, I don't mind pulling the motor again if need be, its pretty easy for me.

I've heard of people doing it, never actually seen it though. I got engine/transmission mounting info from somewhere don't remember but I'm glad they were right when they said they bolt right up to each other.

If you did this a V6 ---to 1.8T swap in Ca--would that set off alarms and void your smog? Anyone know this ---if OP doesnt know?
    Thanks

    CALIFORNIA CERTIFICATION
A federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified (federal or 49–state) engine cannot be used in a vehicle that was originally certified for California.

    CERTIFICATION STANDARDS
Make sure the engine and emission control configuration on exhaust – controlled vehicles are certified to the year of the vehicle or newer, and to the same or a more stringent new vehicle certification standard.

    CLASSIFICATION
Don't mix engine and vehicle classifications which will degrade the emissions certification standards. For example, a heavy–duty engine cannot be installed in a light–duty exhaust–controlled chassis even if they have the same displacement. Non–emissions controlled power plants such as industrial or off–road–use–only engines may not be placed in any exhaust–controlled vehicle.

    COMPUTER CONTROLS
If a computer–controlled engine is installed in a non–computerized vehicle, the "CHECK ENGINE" light, the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) diagnostic link, and all sensors, switches, and wiring harnesses needed to make the system fully functional must also be installed.

    EMISSION CONTROL CONFIGURATION
Mixing and matching emission control system components could cause problems and is generally not allowed. Engine and emission control systems must be in an engine–chassis configuration certified by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) or U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The engine must meet or exceed the requirements for the year and class of vehicle in which it is installed.

    EMISSION WARRANTY
Voiding the vehicle manufacturer's emission warranty is not allowed.

    ENGINE MODIFICATIONS
No internal or external engine modifications (cams, pistons, intakes, etc.) may be performed unless the parts are ARB–exempted or EPA–certified for use in the installed engine. Use the database on this site to search for aftermarket parts covered by ARB Executive Orders.

    ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT
The installed engine and host chassis must retain all of their original emission control equipment. Diesel–to–gasoline conversions must have all gasoline engine and chassis emission control systems installed (such as fillpipe restrictor, catalytic converter and evaporative emission system).

    SMOG INSPECTION
These vehicles must pass a complete smog inspection (visual, functional, and tailpipe).

I've seen one for sale in the SF Craigslist. There was also another for sale on MotorGeek.

    Not a common swap.

Exactly why people are doing lsx swaps in old cars, but not putting old motors in new cars (or least if they want to do it legally)

I think the cali statute reads similar to EPA statute as well, meaning that nationwide you cannot put an older motor in a car newer than the motor.

As for the swap being uncommon, it doesn't make much sense because you could just buy a 97 1.8t. Sounds like OP had a good opportunity though and got it done cheap, so why not?

As far as I know, cali emissions and doing a swap. You just have to swap everything over that is required by the state. Other reasons I just did a swap instead of buying another car.

    - I put a lot of time and effort into doing other things to the car interior/exterior/suspension
    - V6 transmissions have taller gears from what I've heard. I know I can hit 130mph in 4th.
    - Laser Red. Not to many Laser Red B5 Audi's here in colorado that I've seen.
    - I love my car, loved it since I've owned it and I know her like the back of my hand.

Everything was a direct swap over. Removed the old engine wiring harness, and put the 1.8 one in. Only things I had to "fabricate" was the fuel lines needed to be extended going to the engine and I had to reuse/bend to fit the 12v power steering line. I could have pulled them off of the passat fuel lines from gas tank to engine, and the rack and pinion assembly, but i didn't want to have to deal with that much more work to do something that was easy enough to make.

    Thanks everyone for looking btw!

How do you feel about the v6 tranny in a 1.8t? I had that setup for a while and the gearing just felt all wrong, made city driving annoying.

I like it, I haven't driven a 1.8 with matching gearbox so I don't know how much of a difference it is. 1st gear though sucks a little bit without the torque the v6 had. Once i'm in boost though, its enjoyable. I am still able to get off the line faster then my buddy with an 05 R32 even with his launch control. He still catches up and passes me though.

Wow, nice Laser! I absolutely love the red suede. I need to get me some of that action.

B6 wheels are a nice update. I bet people don't believe it's a 96 with nearly 300k when you tell them, eh?

I love the red suede also, I used to have it black and it was nice but I wanted more color and I'm glad I did it. Changed the look inside and everyone loves it when they see it. yeah, no one believes its a 96 because of the facelift and everything else.

Great looking project! I'm thinking of doing the same thing to my '99 2.8Q. Searching for a Craig's List donor car now...
