    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    i thought i would do a review of the pulley i bought off srm

    i installed this today in my driveway with basic tools and a toaster over

    measured pulleys

    stock pulley circumference using my measuring tape was 63.34

    srm pulley using same measuring tape was 57.93

    provided tool worked great and fitment was great

    measurements others have taken that i found on the web

    Stock = 63.25mm
    APR = 57.75mm
    GIAC/AWE = 57.15mm
    srm = 57.93

    for the price you cant beat it, unfortunately apr and giac require you buy their pulley (overpriced!)

    i will be sending out my ecu for a flash by EPL within the next week or two and plan to update with dyno figures and logs to show the differences

    It would be interesting to see the difference in torque between the APR and AWE pulley given the slight change in size.

    From the movie 'Armageddon': Watts: Back off! You don't know the components!

    I'd be really surprised if the major 2's pulley wasn't made in china

    Thanks, one tip I'd give is to use a handheld propane torch instead of a toaster oven, a couple minutes with the propane torch let the pulley slide right on

    The install was very smooth except I couldn't get the pulley hot enough to slide on with a toaster oven. Instead I warmed it up in the oven and used a hand held propane torch to get it hot enough to slide right on.

    After driving it a little bit today I can do absolutely no problems and honestly no changes felt.

    The epl/ams tune is 1250 and can be bought through either epl directly or ams. I believe he even has a couple others that can sell his tune.

    What did you pay for the pulley? It seems like a no brainer to buy/install the pulley and have EPL flash it. You save what $500-700 over GIAC and APR?

    Thanks for documenting this, interesting to hear about the torch/toaster oven. I assume they are using a different metal, so maybe it doesn't have the same thermal expansion coeff? You going for a different file than the standard 93/100? Why are you sending them your ECU, isn't the idea to have them tune your car on a dyno? Will you have to mail them your ECU every time you want to change maps or go back to stock?

    I'm thinking the tolerance might just be a tad bit tighter than apr/giac, or my toaster oven just doesn't get as hot

    No flashing over the port, so initial bench flash now and then I can update via a cable they sell. Well also be able to flash back to the stock file if needed to be brought in for service

    If EPL allows flashing back to stock with their cable at home then count me in. I should contact them if they have a b8.5 tune.

    Do you mean stock file, or ECU back to stock pre-flash? I know this is a grey area that everyone loves to go back and forth on, but being able to spoof the TD1 computer with an at home flash revert sounds pretty tasty. No way that I'll be an early adopter, but am interested to see how this plays out.

    Thanks for posting your findings, community appreciates it even if we like to bicker about it. We all benefit from competition, hell, my boss gets mad when a competitor botches a product launch because it causes people at our company to get complacent.

    Good luck meng. Props to you for doing something different. Interested in the results.

    And yeah as much as the forum knows the history of EPL with Audi's as well as SRM.. they are still eager to know results. They'd probably respect it a little bit more if it's proven to be just as reliable and makes decent power.

    I have also measured the SRM pulley, with a caliper it reads 57.25mm, I will measure my AWE pulley next week when it arrives, Austin from GIAC indicated that it was 57.15mm, but I will confirm that

    I am pretty sure APR makes theirs in house....at least I saw a bunch next to their CNC machine and one being made while I was there.

    Not to thread jack but Malone Tuning also has a tune for our S4s and i have the SRM pulley and have had it on for a while pulley with no tune still gets boost on sooner about 500rpm. Pre tune and post tune to come dyno appointment set for post already but a nice boost for sure.

    Compared to the rest of the industry it's backwards, that would be like them saying you have to have their intake and their exhaust to get their tune.. .

    I agree, and I am very happy that these smaller companies are offering a cost effective product.

    Which again shows that low and behold the big tuners are overcharging simply because you don't know any better. But we know this already... it's just becoming more mainstream of a realization as more and more of you finally come to this realization.

    I dont think it is because we dont know any better..... It is more like the market dictates the price of said product and the consumers are willing to pay that price. Until more companies come out with equivalent quality products at a lower cost, the consumer has no choice but to pay these high prices.
