    Reverse Gear Grinding

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi there,

I've had my Stage 3 S4 for over a week now, and it is great! However, I have noticed that when engaging reverse, it sometimes makes a grinding noise when the shift lever is engaged in reverse. It doesn't prevent reverse from engaging, but it is not a pleasant noise. All other gears engage and shift very smoothly. Any input on what may be the cause of this? The tranny was rebuilt when the Stage 3 build was done by the p/o 5k miles ago. The car currently has 115k miles. I've searched but could not find a solid answer.

Also, does anyone have a JHM Short Shifter for sale (Late style)? I'm interested in installing one. I've searched on older threads and see mostly positive reviews, so what do you guys think of the JHM SS?

    Thanks!

I know it may be obvious but you've gotta come to a complete stop then try reverse. I'll catch myself every now and again jump the gun and try and shove it in while the cars still moving and it'll grind.

For the JHM SS I've got it, like it a lot, real solid and notchy feeling, way shorter throws hah. Some people buy it, install, and just end up not liking it. Perception will vary person to person. Check the classifieds, I don't know any one selling one.

I actually have the same issue, and it doesnt matter if im moving or stationary. Id like to know a solution to this problem aswell.

@wagonholic, when you put it into reverse, do you have to use force/ work it into the gear?

It goes into reverse without excess force, but it makes an unpleasant sound and I don't want to damage anything.

I read somewhere that reverse isn't synchronized, so today I waited a second after pressing the clutch before putting it in reverse. No grinding.

Reverse is a spurred gear so gear contact is loud

It's because the reverse gear on an s4 has a separate synchronizer so the dog teeth wear usually fast

Reverse gear has a whining sound. Doesn't concern me though.

Oh and I always come to a complete stop before switching to reverse

I usually put it into first then into reverse quickly to help slow down the synchros

+1, I have a JHM short throw and have ran into the grinding problem a few times in the past. I have yet to encounter it if I shift into first before trying reverse. Like anything else after a while it becomes a habit and at this point I hardly think about it.

And yes reverse whines, that's normal as they are straight cut teeth.

You may just need to adjust the shifter, if it's off it could cause it to do that sometimes
