    Cvt -> 5spd (auto)

    I have a 2002 b6 (fwd) that had a cvt tranny that went out code (FSE) I want to swap it and put a 5spd auto in it code (fep) due to price and quality of the cvt tranny. How difficult would this swap be?

    The 01V ZF 5HP19FLA FEP trans is a quattro transmission. There are 5HP19 transmissions for front wheel drive, but that trans was not offered here in NA, only Europe/Rest of world. I don't believe swapping a different type of auto trans is practical. Find a good used CVT instead.

    5MT FWD swap is the only reasonable swap to do (other than replacing/repairing the CVT unit with like parts).

    If you want it to bolt in directly without having to swap the subframe as well, you want a 5MT from a B6 A4. Additionally, you will want one that matches your 1.8T engine (3.0 unit will bolt up, but gearing will be too long).

    So that leaves these codes: ENN, FPS, FTW, GBN, GFU, HFB (and possibly HFC, but I can't confirm on that one)

    I'm not a parts guy (or a mechanic, or even a reliable person), so double check before you buy something - but those should be the direct-fit 5MT boxes that you can use to suit a 1.8T in a B6 CVT chassis.

    To make this swap mad cheap: if you swap the subframe to a Tiptronic one (or happen to have a subframe with the tiptronic mounting ears), you can use older (ie: plentiful and cheap) 5-speed boxes from FWD B5 A4's and B5 Passats. These can regularly be had for $150-200. A subframe swap would be a little bit of a pain without a lift, but it's an option.

    They are but the early B6 (2002) had the speed sensor in the trans just like the B5. The 2003+ B6 cars use the wheel speed sensor. Regardless it is not difficult to convert your wiring to match either case.

    It wouldn't matter anyway as the B6 ECU gets the speed signals from hall sensors in the wheels.

    I have a B5 2.8 5MT quattro tranny swapped in place of a tiptronic and it does have a provision for the speed sensor there but I didn't use it because of this.

    In the end I agree.

    Hi Guys,

    Sorry to bring back a dead thread but I was wondering if you guys can tell me the transmission code of the B5 transmission that will bolt right onto the b6 a4? My sister's b6 a4 2003 1.8T CVT transmission code 01J just crapped out. We want to swap in another transmission but don't want the same thing to happen again. So we would rather put in a different, more reliable transmission.

    From what I've read here, the B5 transmission will bolt right up and we won't need to do anything on the B5's built in transmission since the speed sensor are on the wheels on the 2003 and up. Do we need to do anything else on the TCU / ECU?

    Please advice.

    Thanks!

    You can look at mine, I'm doing a swap right now. There are several ways to do it, I chose direct bolton. Meaning I bought a donor car 2003 FWD 5spd. You can search CVT swap and see a few that have been done, but the B5 has some oddities you'll have to overcome (CV AXels, starter, depends on what parts you get)
