Happy birthday me! Sad update to a LOOONG run...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well fellas, long time no post. I hate to jump back on the boards under these circumstances, but it is what it is, I suppose. A refresher for the guys that remember and for those unfamiliar with the car:

Took the fiancée out for some fun in the snow last week with both the AWD cars. She took some cool pictures(as cool as cell phone pics can be )! Unaware these were the last shots I'd have of the car. Took a fun little video for you guys. Ignore the spare wheel, I was rebuilding the iForgeds up front to 9.5" and was waiting for the seal to set on the last wheel when the snow hit.

Well, not the way I want to end this fun thread, but here goes. Some guy playing on his phone going 45-50mph, officers determined, destroyed my car while I was stopped completely, in traffic on my birthday 3 days ago. He rear ended me and pushed me into a Corolla hard enough to push her off the road. He hit me so hard, after I pushed the Corolla off the road I went 15 more feet and got sandwiched between his van and another van. His bumper was in my backseat, literally. The rear of my car is non-existent. It broke my driver seat he hit me so hard. None of my airbags deployed for some reason(separate issue Audi is going to investigate) and let my head hit the steering wheel. She's totalled...My back, left knee, right Achilles and head(concussion) all pretty banged up was the worst I got from this, so I have NOTHING to complain about. I'm not dead, so that I'm grateful for. I was PERFECTLY content keeping this car forever. I STILL, after 7 years, got a smile on my face sitting in it and firing it up. It was meticulously maintained. Paint was perfect, interior was flawless, and drove like new. I LOVED that car(as many of you can identify with). It was a GREAT, fun ride. No regrets. She'll be missed. This is sadly what is left of her...

Damn that sucks. Glad your ok though. I wish that it was illegal in every state to use a cell phone in a vehicle. I drive 100 miles a day round trip to work and I can't even begin to put a number on how many people I pass and look at as I am going by and their head is down looking at their phone. It's absolutly ridiculous!

good to see youre ok. Its unbelievable how well these cars stay together in most accidents (Aside from the crinkle zones). I'd like to know what they say about the air bags not deploying.

wow, never seen your car on the forum because i have never frequented the B6 A4 forum, it is/was a great looking car. Unbelievable that the airbags didnt deploy. I know you are banged up, but it seems like you will make a full recovery and that is what's most important. Cars can be replaced.

    GEEZE!!!

Echoing the above sentiments. Glad to see that she took as good of care as you as you did her! Similar thing happened to me (not as serious) on my 35th...one light from the house. I hit a deer causing $6800 worth of damage to my B5 Avant.

Curious to hear Audi's findings on the airbag not deploying.

Wowww, that's an awful accident. Glad to hear you made it out with your life and hopefully no permanent injuries. I can tell you one thing, you should have no problem getting an identical B6 after you sue the shit out of him and possibly Audi. I'm sure they would give you some type of settlement if you went after them too. You could grab something newer if you were looking for something different but nonetheless definitely be back in a B6. Do you have any plans yet or just taking it all in still? Your car was amazing, it's so shitty to see it go out like that.

Firstly, OP, very glad you survived in more or less one piece. You may have to establish a relationship with a good chiropractor, though.

Sorry for the loss of your beautiful B6, too.

It's really frightening and sad that so many people out there don't realize the danger they are putting themselves, their children, and their fellow humans in while using their cell phones while driving.

Regarding the airbags not deploying, it sure looks like the collision in front with the Corolla was severe enough that they should have deployed. Please keep us informed on what Audi(or rather their lawyers) have to say about that.

Holy crap, Brandon. So glad you are okay with minor injuries... that could have been much, much worse.

So sad to see another OG B6 enthusiast get taken out be a careless driver. Really is a damn shame, hope they throw the books at that guy. Another reason that when I rally my Audi across the country, my team name is, Team No Texting. Car is vinyled in Anti-texting and driving slogans and stickers.

Wow, Brandon, very sorry to see this. I hope you find a good physiotherapist and chiropractor like mentioned above.

In Ontario, Canada, the law now is becoming more strict for distracted driving (cellphones). Fine for this is $285, and I believe there are demerit points issued as well.

Dude my heart dropped at that pic. Glad you are still alive. Even though we don't formally know each other, Audizine being our common link, I'm very glad you are 'ok'.

I'm sure this won't be a short process in getting everything resolved, expecially if lawyers are involved. I hope you hired a good one. Sounds like Audi and the texting driver both owe you something for damages. Get well soon.

I am not really surprised the air bags did not deploy, since there are no crash sensors in the rear of the car. The subsequent collision with the Toyota was not as severe as the first one from behind. The airbags are intended to activate on frontal and side collisions, but that depends on the sensed crash dynamics, and each crash is different. Below a certain road speed, the air bags are inhibited also.

I don't know about that one....I was in a very similar accident in a Saturn SC2, where I was sitting at a complete stop and a guy in a ford ranger slammed into the back of me pushing me into the car in front. The front end damage was not nearly as bad as Brandon's, and all the airbags went off.

If this were the case, I don't see why Audi would even want to humor the idea of investigating it.

Your attitude about all of this is overwhelmingly positive which is as significant as both how beautiful your car once was and how effective it was in protecting you in the end.

That said... glad you're okay and hope the recovery process goes well. As for your car... fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk.

Very happy to know you're OK, that is some wickid carnage. I didn't even recognize the car as an Audi at first, thought it might be your GFs, then, on second look, I was shocked...

I'm not a litigious person but if I was you, I would sue the hell out of the guilty driver using the cell phone. He's lucky he didn't severely injure you or even worse...and he should pay (you) for that in order to learn his lesson. If you had died, he'd very likely be looking at many years in prison for homicide, so the fact you were in a safe car should not make his punishment be light. Drivers on cell phones who get in accidents need to have their asses handed to them, that's the only way people are going to start thinking twice about using their phones while driving.

Always love your car and your posts. Hope you get through this in better shape than you were before and with a car you love equally as much as the B6 (or more).

He'll never learn his lesson because the piece of shits insurance company is gonna pay out a settlement and this guy will never hear about it again. He'll just have to pay an extra premium which will feel normal after a few months of paying it. I'll bet that guy didn't even have the decency to check if Brandon was ok. Woah. Perfect time for an avant mod!
Glad you are alright. I'll be watching my rear view mirror a little more than usual at stop lights today.

The front end damage was not nearly as bad as Brandon's, and all the airbags went off.

If this were the case, I don't see why Audi would even want to humor the idea of investigating it.
Yeah, anyone would expect the airbags to deploy in a collision such a this one. However, the Saturn airbag controller thresholds for deployment are not the same as what Audi specifies. It's likely the forward velocity of your Saturn exceeded the inhibit speed if they are the same value. The airbag controller stores the relevant values that occurred during the crash event, so there is something to investigate, even if the deployment was properly inhibited. Audi doesn't know what the specifics are without obtaining the crash data from the airbag controller. If the airbags deploy, and the activation forces are higher than the detected or programmed crash forces, then severe injury from the airbags activating, can occur. I know of several other Audis involved in crashes where none of the airbags deployed as well. It's not unusual.

This makes me sick... I can't imagine how this would have turned out if you had a baby on board. Glad you're OK cause this could have been catastrophically worse in any other situation...

I am very saddened for your loss. Not to sound insensitive but, are you picking up another B6 now that you have all the knowledge and experience?
