    About to Install Coilovers...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone have experience in DIY install? I haven't installed suspension myself, but I've helped friends do them a couple of times. I'm either going to have a local mechanic do it for $240, or give it a shot by myself... depending how cocky I feel. Anyone with expertise have any words of wisdom to contribute?

I'm not much of a help, but care to share who would install it for $240 in this area? I just ordered some coilovers for my S4 and need someone to install them when I get them. I'd rather pay for the coilover install, Normally I'm a DIY guy, but after doing coils on my B7, I told myself next time I would just pay for someone to do it.

They can be a pain in the ass depending on how old your car is. This could be due to rust and build up. Im assuming you are putting this on your 2009 S5. There are a few ways to install the coils, either from the top or bottom, both would be better with two people. If you trust the mechanic, 240 isn't a bad price at all. I would and do pay a mechanic I know to do mine.

Ditto. You can DIY but you can't beat $240.

Thanks for the advice guys. The $240 was actually a quote from a friend who does local work out of his garage, so I'm assuming it's a friend discounted rate. That said it wouldn't be a fancy/official/certified job, that's why I was deciding between that, or attempting it myself.

What's the DIY look like? After help installing my old coils, I would attempt to do it on my own next time.

Here's one I glanced over last night, but seeing as it's from the manufacturer, it has a lot more torque specs and safer guidelines than other DIY's I've read that are more "improvised". e.g. the KW manual says only use compressors, other member DIYs be like "pop that shit out with a pry bar"

ECS has one for H&R coilovers but they are all pretty much the same. There are some things that can be a pain in the ass but its certainly doable as suspension is not rocket science by any means. I did it with a couple buddies on one of old S4 avants and had no issues other than it being time consuming.

I also paid $370 to Induktion to install my H&R's on my current S4 because I just didn't want to mess with it.

$370's not bad, did that include alignment? Got a set of H&R's in my living room waiting to be installed once I get rid of my winter setup here in a few weeks hopefully.

The front's are relatively easy to do, but getting the rear springs out are a PITA. Just don't take the rear subframe assembly bolts all the way out or you're going to have a bad time.

Using jackstands might take all day, so I'd suggest finding someone who has a lift.

For $240 in this weather, I would be lazy and do DIY on another mod.

IF you think your friend will apply the same level of care as you would!

No alignment, with its another $100 or so. I have a place a little closer to me that I prefer for alignments.
