Center console button not working.

So the button that locks the center console in place and adjusts the height decided to break. I figured I would try to put it in vertical position and now it's stuck there. I'm at a loss how I can get the damn thing back down. I need my armrest while driving I was so tempted to just rip it down so I could use it. Anyone know how to fix it?

you need to replace the armrest. common issue, plastic tab in the mechanism breaks and the armrest gets stuck in the upright position. look for a used one on the classifieds, they cost an arm and a leg new

So can I just force it down for the time being without breaking the whole mechanism. Meaning force the thing down and not have to replace the whole center console later?
