MAF Connector...sigh

Ok so I am lucky enough to have to change my MAF again, lucky it was still under warranty. This time however the connector disintegrated to a unusable mess when I went to remove it along with a broken wire (don't ask how). Perhaps why my logs showed the MAF failing, but the MAF is good for sure now regardless.

So I can only think of getting one from a used car and pig tailing it on. The dealer wants like 60 bucks for the parts and I have to assemble.


I am looking for any kits that you all may know that will cross over or other models of cars that are the same. I got one given to me from a 2000 is Golf but it was a 4 pin and I require a 5. it only uses 4 of them but it won't go on for obvious reasons.

Use the right connector; $60 is not a lot to spend to have your car run properly.

Hold up.

Did the female plug break? Did the male plug break? Which wire broke and where did it break at exactly?
I ripped out a wire of the female MAF harness and ended up rebuilding it, which is actually super easy.

There are two types of 5 Pin female MAF housings you can buy, here is one of them. Don't even bother trying to find a pigtail, they are super rare to find for sale. Search the forums, there are some super useful threads about rebuilding the MAF harness, it really is as easy as snapping one lead into the new harness. If you broke a wire but the pin is still inside the housing, once you disassemble the bad housing, resolder the wire to the pin. Or you can buy a new pin wire assembly which is around $12 at the dealer for 2 pins+wire (one wire but cut it in half).

EDIT: here is a good repair guide, good thing I bookmarked it a while back. Repairing the Coilpack Harness is the same as repairing the MAF harness, just one is 4 pin and the other is 5.

AudiB5owner, yea I was looking for something quicker than waiting for my dealer to bring it in. In the end I think this is best option regardless, thanks for the link.

Mad Hatter, I am looking for the proper connector technically. This connector is used on a lot of VW or Audi models, just curious if anyone happen to know what range I could look at.

Yeah man it really can be done for less than $60. If you have a soldering gun to reconnect your broken wire to the pin connector you're good to go. I forgot how I got the pin connectors out exactly, you have to take out the retaining clip and then pop them out. I think I used some fine tweezers, and they just click right back into the new MAF harness housing. Good as new. That is the housing with a blue slide out retaining clip, the original one is a little different with a pink retaining clip that pops out but they are the same. For $7 plus shipping, it is not bad at all. Might as well buy something else that is small from ECS while you're at it since their shipping rates are ridiculous.

I got the plug from my local dealer. However, I can't find the broken one and for whatever reason they don't exactly know what wires there are. They have these wires with clips already prepared on each end but need to know exactly which ones to get.

Any ideas on parts number for these clips or wire gauge? I am still looking for the broken one I know I set down some where but can't locate.

I'd try and find that clip so you can resolder it on instead of buying the prereassembled wire. If you search around you may be able to find the P/N for the pin clip connector itself.

One is 1mm, one is 0.5mm, and the other 2 are 0.35mm. This is according to the wiring diagram.

Honestly though, $10 is crazy expensive for one wire. Is there no aftermarket pigtail with the same connector?

I found the connector this morning and I am going to try and save said clips.

Mad Cow, your right hence why I started this thread because I wanted to see if there is anything else, which looks like there isn't.

Technically you buy 1 and cut it in half so it's 5 per in the end but left over with a spare on the larger one and 1 smaller.

There is 3 of the same size and 1 larger. I really appreciate the feedback guys as well!

All repaired, thanks for the advise. I broke apart the old already broken connector to get the end outs. I didn't open them up, just soldered on the top of where it would crimp so the weather plugs would fit back in them.

Now to figure out what the lean code is. The MAF wasn't the problem entirely. I logged it and saw it reading lower than it should which is better now, but when it gets to -10 I start getting the lean code and improper air flow together. I am going to start another thread to see what everyone can offer.

That's exactly how I repaired my MAF harness. Glad it worked out. MAF should read around 4 CFM at idle. Hope your lean issue is resolved soon as well.
